Tornadoes claim girls crown going away

ONTARIO — Columbian's girls could've sat out the final event and still been assured of at least a tie for the title, but the Tornadoes left no doubt.Olyvia Steinmetz, Addison Fortney, Kennedy Slosser and Korryn Potts claimed the 200 medley relay by more than seven seconds over runner-up Ontario Saturday to best the host Warriors 293-255 for the Ontario Invitational championship.Columbian led Ontario by 32 points — the exact number of points a winning team earns in a swim meet relay race — heading into the day's final event.Potts touched the wall in 1:59.63 in the 200 medley relay, well ahead of runner-up Ontario (2:07.22) to lock up the team crown for the Tornadoes in the 11-team meet.The same quartet in a different order — Potts, Steinmetz, Slosser and Fortney — also captured the 200 free relay (1:46.32), with Fortney adding a victory in the 100 free (57.17).Slosser also turned in runner-up efforts in the 200 IM (2:25.61) and 100 fly (1:04.76), with Fortney swimming second in the 50 free (26.08).Steinmetz swam second in the 100 back (1:06.86) and a third in the 200 free (2:11.09).Layne Woodruff (1:19.49), Abigail Willman (1:19.73) and Potts (1:19.79) finished second through fourth in the 100 breast.Woodruff, Anne Young, Alaina Sherman and Willman took third in the 400 free relay (4:10.35).Potts added a fourth in the 50 free (27.07), and fifths went to Willman in the 200 IM (2:33.67), Woodruff in the 100 free (1:01.7) and Kinsey Slosser in the 100 back (1:12.29). Staib leads TC to fifthONTARIO — Braden Staib turned in a pair of top-five finishes in individual events and helped Columbian's boys end in the top five in two relays Saturday to guide the Tornadoes to fifth at the Ontario Invitational.Staib claimed third in the 200 IM (2:21.48) and fifth in the 100 breast (1:14.81) to spark the Tornadoes.He joined with Nolan Danielson and Austin Poignon to help TC finish fourth in both the 400 free relay (4:03.96) and the 200 medley relay (2:00.14).Vinnie Kidwell joined them on the 400 free relay, and Parker Szablewski rounded out the 200 medley relay.Ontario powered past Colonel Crawford 296-228 1/2 for the title in the 11-team field. Columbian scored 101 points for fifth.
