Sports story of the week – OK, you can decide

There were many, many stories emanating from the world of sports this week. Choosing the most significant one is difficult. So I will enlist your help. I will provide six stories that grabbed my attention. You can then decide which, if any, is the most important to you. There is no wrong answer here, You can even rank them if you want.The six stories that I will now recap are not put in any order so don't assume the first one I cite is my choice for top scoop. You know what happens when you assume…AN NBA BLOCKBUSTER TRADE. Seldom does one see two big stars traded at the midpoint of the season, but it happened this week. The Dallas Mavericks apparently grew tired of their star Luka Doncic not taking care of himself physically. Despite his immense talents and young age (25) he was dealt to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis. There were other players involved, but few people outside of those players families noticed. Doncic has not been playing due to injury and he let his weight get a little too high for the Mavs liking. I can't help but think if it was me (seriously try to imagine me as Luka Doncic!) I would have been traded a long time ago. I do like to eat and seldom eat healthy foods.Anthony Davis too has been injured, but when healthy he is a key player for the Lakers. Dallas likes his defense (try matching me with Davis and defense – it might be funnier than weight control) and the Lakers are banking that there will be enough basketballs to keep The King and Doncic happy. Personally I think that will not be a problem. Both will get many touches (assuming the Lakers keep LeBron, and yes there are rumors flying).Whatever happens will be closely watched and this is one of the biggest deals in NBA history. What makes it more interesting is that no one seems to have seen it coming - players, teammates, reporters, etc. I find it difficult to believe that LeBron James was NOT consulted.RORY MCILROY WINS AT PEBBLE BEACH. Golf fans were treated to a beautiful Sunday weather day at one of the greatest venues (it's #1 for me) in all of golf. McIlroy is very popular and his win was thrilling for most golf fans. For me though, the highlight might have been Cam Davis' chip shot on the historic 18th hole. Did you see it?His ball rested in some nasty looking roots and the base of the tree near the green. Just trying to hit it would put a wrist injury in play. He pulled it off even though he had to let loose of the club with his left hand at impact. He chipped it over the bunker and even put spin on it with the ball stopping two feet from the cup. He made the birdie putt.The next shot came from Justin Rose and all he did was use a fairway wood as a putter and run one in from well off the green for eagle. The two best back-to-back shots I've ever seem? I can't remember any better.OHIO STATE LOSES TWO COORDINATORS. The news came quickly after the Buckeyes won the National Championship. Defensive coordinator Jim Knowles has left OSU and taken a similar position with Penn State. A few days later it was offensive coordination Chip Kelly who bolted for the NFL in the same position with the Los Vegas Raiders.Kelly got a boatload of money to move to Vegas. Knowles also will be rewarded financially to see if he can do the same with the Nittany Lions that he did in Columbus.A few thoughts: 1) it is common for championship teams to lose coaches, 2) Ohio State will be just fine with new staff and 3) don't expect to see OSU repeat as champions – it doesn't happen often!CAITLIN CLARK'S JERSEY IS RETIRED. This may not have been a big deal outside of Iowa, but it was still cool. If you are going to retire a jersey worn by a former star, putting aside the #22 of the leading scorer in women's college basketball history would be a good choice.For me the big thing was Iowa defeated #2 USC (and JuJu Watkins who one day could break Clark's record) on this special day. That had to be cool for Iowa fans.BASEBALL FIRES AN UMPIRE. Umpires get a lot of criticism for missing calls. More often than not, they are unfairly targeted. Never, it seems, are they axed for poor performance. They are very good at what they do.So when MLB fired umpire Pat Hoberg it was a big deal. It was disappointing to me that the reason for his dismissal involved gambling. Now let's be clear. The investigation did not suggest he gambled on baseball or otherwise affected a game. But he did associate with a known gambler and that is a no no for big league baseball.He admitted he used bad judgment and accepted his punishment although he suggests he did nothing really wrong. He will be able to apply for reinstatement in a couple of years. It will be interesting to see if he is rehired. Whatever, the firing of an umpire is a big deal.Now if you believe that the week begins on Monday as I do there is one more day in this week. I believe there is some football game on Sunday. Maybe that will be the biggest story of the week. But hey, it's your choice.
