Patrizi, Quaintance shine at D-III district

ROSSFORD — Mohawk and Lakota each crowned a champion and ended with three state qualifiers Saturday at the Division III district wrestling tournament.Owen Patrizi took the 132-pound title for Mohawk and Braxton Quaintance claimed the 165-pound championship for Lakota, with each dominating their way through their respective brackets.Patrizi's closest match came in the semifinals, where he beat Liberty-Benton's Will Pask 11-4.He followed that up with an 8-0 major decision in the championship bout against Delta's Richard Flores.His two matches Friday included a pin of Lake's Blake Salley (:51) and a 10-2 major decision victory against Willard's Luke Sloan.Quaintance had an even easier run to his title.He pinned Delta's Lane Lopez (1:17) in the semifinals before flattening Woodmore's Landon Rich (:41) for the title.Those wins came after Friday's pin of Liberty Center's Deagan Schwaigger (2:59) and a 23-4 technical fall win against Elmwood's Connor Sterling.They'll each be joined by two teammates and Seneca East 215-pounder Alex Young at the three-day state tournament, which begins Friday, at Ohio State University's Schottenstein Center.Mohawk's Kaden Bish took second at 175 pounds after suffering a 17-2 technical fall loss to Edison Luke James, and teammate Brant Kirian captured third at 138 pounds with a 2-1 win against Swanton's Chase Godwin.Lakota got fourths from 150-pounder Lane Thacker and 175-pounder Grant Bomer.Genoa's Tyler Abbey doubled up Thacker 4-2, and Tinora's Aiden Helmke beat Bomer 5-1.Bish and Bomer started Saturday by facing off in the 175-pound semifinals, with Bish battling to an 11-9 win.Bomer fell to the consolation semifinals, where he dropped Liberty-Benton's Colin Bates 7-1 in sudden victory.Kirian also started Saturday in a semifinal, but suffered a 21-6 technical fall loss to Edison's Abe Hermes.He rebounded with a 4-1 win in the consolation semifinals against Delta's Carl Warner before edging Godwin.Monroeville's Landon Roeder — he went on to win the title — edged Thacker 2-1 in the 150-pound semifinals. Thacker answered by pinning Carey's Jordan Hertel (1:47) in the consolation semifinals before his loss to Helmke.Young earned a state berth for Seneca East by taking fourth in a 7-5 loss to Archbold's Parker Bixler.Young spent all of Saturday in the consolation bracket, pinning Gibsonburg's Haydin Brown (1:57) and Patrick Henry's Skyler Rita (2:05) before scoring a 9-1 major decision against Plymouth's Noah Robinson in the consolation semifinals.Three other area grapplers — Hertel, Mohawk 165-pounder Lance Frankart and Calvert 285-pounder Cameron Bagent — ended sixth.Hertel started his Saturday with a 10-0 major decision win against Archbold's C.J. McMurray advanced to the consolation quarterfinals via a default against Ontario's Mason Turnbaugh.Bellevue 165-pounder Layne Begley lost via a 16-0 technical fall to Kenton's Isaac Blevins in the second round of the consolations.Fellow Redmen Bill Sberna was pinned in the second round of the 175-pound consolations by Wapakoneta's Wyatt Buell (:34).Fostoria had two competitors fall in the second round of the consolations.Norwalk 175-pounder Kevin Howard scored a 17-0 technical fall against Silas Raney, and Ontario 190-pounder Landen Sowards pinned Xavier Willmarth (1:59). 4 local girls heading to stateFINDLAY – Several local girls were looking to make it down to the Schottenstein Center next weekend in Columbus for the state wrestling tournament. Several girls put themselves into good positions to qualify at the Findlay district, but it was four that qualified.Clyde's Avery Gaskalla (105 pounds) and Meredith Greenslade (115), Seneca East's Kiera Depinet (135) and Calvert's Allison Ott (190) will be wrestling next weekend in Columbus. The only other placer locally was Seneca East's Kendyll Salyer (110) with a sixth-place finish Sunday.Gaskalla started with a pin in 3:32 of Toledo Whitmer's Renea Edmondson, beat Gibsonburg's Lillian Kendel 6-2 to move onto the semifinals. But then she fell 13-3 to Elmwood's Triniti Bechstein. She then pinned Edgerton's Ava Herman in 4:25 and then pinned Kendel in 1:35 to take third place.For her teammate Greenslade, she stuck Delta's Corynn Meyer in 1:29, but then lost 16-1 to North Royalton's Anna Tsirambidis. Greenslade then battled her way in the consolation bracket with a pin in 45 seconds of Sandusky's Jakiya Johnson, a 1:54 pin of Elyria's Ravenna Guidicelli, a 4:59 pin of Alliance's Avery Horning and then she topped Wauseon's Kaelynn Hartsock 10-1 in the third-place match.The highest placer for the girls was Depinet as she was runner-up. Depinet started her district tournament with a 46-second pin of Elmwood's Ava Lowery, then won by a 19-2 tech fall over Lorain's Alaysia Coleman and then pinned Fair Park Fairview's Nora Mooney in 4:41 to reach the final. In the 135-pound title match, Alliance's Abigail Mozden handled Depinet 22-6.Salyer stuck Findlay's Addison Gerkens in 3:04 in the first round, but then she was pinned in 3:53 by Elmwood's Lylah Gheen. In the consolation bracket, Salyer beat Crestview's Kate Sawmiller 9-5, pinned Lexington's Kyler Lamb in 1:00, but then was pinned in 4:52 to Arcadia's Charlize Distel. She then was pinned in the fifth-place match in 3:27 by Alliance's Ashlynn Pennington.For Ott, she started her tourney with a 46-second pin of Valley Forge's Zyaira Brashers. She then stuck Montpelier's Madyson Smith in just 32 ticks, but then she fell 14-0 to Lakewood's Zayna Muntaster in the semifinals. Ott then pinned Normandy's Tamrah Szucs in 2:26 and then fell by a two-minute pin to Port Clinton's Michaela Stork in the third-place match.
