COLUMBUS — Mohawk's Owen Patrizi and Kaden Bish and Lakota's Braxton Quaintance each rolled in their opening match Thursday at the Division III state wrestling tournament.Patrizi advanced to today's 132-pound championship quarterfinals with a 19-3 technical fall against Triad's Wyatt Smith.Quaintance pinned Allen East's Jacob Pinks (1:06) in their 165-pound bout.Bish had the closest match of the three, taking a 26-14 major decision scorefest from Canton Central Catholic's Issac Ray to advance in the 175-pound weight class.The Lakota duo of 150-pounder Lane Thacker and 175-pounder Grant Bomer each fell in their opening match before earning a win in the consolation bracket to remain alive.Thacker fell 11-5 to Beachwood's Caleb Greenwood before scoring a 15-0 technical fall against Crooksville's Hunter Browning.Bomer lost 8-4 to Rootstown's Brian Youngblood, then edged Waterford's Colten Jones 1-0.Mohawk 138-pounder Brant Kirian and Seneca East 215-pounder Alex Young each lost twice and were eliminated.Kirian suffered a 14-5 major decision loss to Barnesville's Colt Carpenter and then lost 6-2 to Dayton Northridge's Sulaiman Muhammed.Young was pinned (4:55) by Harrison Central's Knox McKibben before losing 2-0 to Dalton's Kaden Russell. Jacobs moves to championship quarterfinalsCOLUMBUS — Bellevue's Ben Jacobs easily won his opener to move to today's championship quarterfinals and three other area grapplers won a consolation match to remain alive Thursday on the first day of the Division II state wrestling tournament.Jacobs cruised to a 16-4 major decision win against Cambridge's Mason Hill in the first round of the 144-pound weight class.Fellow Redmen Jeremiah Hash and Tatum Gore lost in their opening round bouts, but rebounded with wins in the first consolation round.Hash lost 11-4 to Morgan's Bradley Spencer at 157 pounds before pinning Canfield's Tristan Miller (3:56).Canfield's Gabe Miller pinned Gore (5:52) in their 190-pound match, with Gore slipping past Philo's Gibson Swartz 9-8 after that.Clyde 144-pounder Michael Gessner is the other local athlete who advanced to today's action.He suffered a 10-2 major decision loss in his opener to Steubenville's Cooper Smith, then scored a 16-5 major decision win against Franklin's Tucker Campbell in the consolation bracket.Clyde 113-pounder Heath Norris and Upper Sandusky 157-pounder Ethan Lewis each lost twice.Norris fell 9-7 to Caledonia River Valley's Karson Jenkins and 7-1 to Logan Elm's Dawsen Hudson, while Lewis suffered a 17-2 technical fall loss to Sheridan's Coltyn Reedy before falling 8-6 to Franklin's Jack Berry.
