Village of Attica installs new signage

ATTICA — The Village of Attica recently installed several new signs in the village, a project Parks and Recreation Director Nicole Lenhart shared she has been working on for a little over a year. The project was made possible due to a variety of things, including an OSS grant the village was approved for last August as well as a generous donation from a late resident of the village, according to Lenhart. "The project began last year after I spoke with members of the Seneca Regional Planning Commission, letting them know our signs were in bad shape due to weathering," she said. From there, she encouraged the village to apply for a grant through the Ottawa-Sandusky-Seneca (OSS) Solid Waste District, but due to a high turnover rate council voted it down. "In June (2024) we applied for that same grant again, and were approved in August. Part of the signs were made possible through the grant– which the village has to match 25% to," said Lenhart. The signs were also made possible due to a donation from Mary Jane Brakeall– a long term resident of the village who died on May 19, 2022. "Mary Jane was heavily involved with the community and is a well known name in the village," said Lenhart."When she passed away, she had donated over $3,000 to the village for what she labeled 'improvements', so that has helped with the project immensely as well." The signs will contain a memorial plaque, recognizing Brakeall and her family for their generous donation to the village. At the time of publication, two of four signs have been installed.
