Old Fort BOE discusses contracts

BETTSVILLE — The Old Fort School Board of Education discussed the employment and contracts of several district employees at its regular meeting Monday. Among the matters discussed was the retirement of high school art teacher Julie Wax, which included a presentation from a graduating senior who will be attending Bowling Green State University to major in art education. The student, who was named only as Luke, said he was proud of what he has accomplished while working with Wax and being able to take advantage of an art program while in school has meant everything to him. Wax has been teaching in Old Fort for 34 years and will continue to teach adults after retiring later this year. Also approved at the board meeting were the resignations of Amber Plikerd, Fred Davis and Angelina Grove. The board later voted to hire Amber Plikerd with a two-year contract as director of student services, renew a two-year contract with Jay Morelock as high school principal, renew a two-year contract with Gary Barrett as high school assistant principal, a three-year contract with Lacy Schwochow as school psychologist and a three-year contract with Don Pratt as safety director. Kara Pence was later approved as a paraprofessional for the 2025-2026 school year. Superintendent Cindy Endsley updated the board about the new district strategic plan, unveiling a new logo for the district and reporting the district was looking to provide more support for gifted students and promote whole-body wellness district-wide. Endsley also informed the board there were an estimated $30,000 in maintenance projects she was working on, including laying a new gas line and an air quality study. The next Old Fort board of education meeting is 6 p.m. May 12 in the Old Fort Elementary School Library.
