Human remains found in river

HURON TWP. — Law enforcement confirmed a deceased person was found in the Huron River Friday morning and believes foul play is involved. The body was found by a kayaker shortly after 10 a.m. and the Erie County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene shortly thereafter, Sheriff Paul Sigsworth said. Deputies found the body in a marshy area about 1,000 feet south of the Ohio 2 bridge on the west side of the river in Huron Township, Sigsworth said. "The remains are badly decomposed," Sigsworth said, adding that responders were unable to identify the person. "It appears the body may have been in the river for some time." Sigsworth said he believes foul play is involved "based on the appearance of the body and the manner in which it was found." "Where that foul play occurred will be a part of the ongoing investigation," he said. Along with deputies, the Erie County coroner, Huron Fire Department and Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation responded to the scene, the latter of which brought crime scene technician vehicles. Sigsworth said Erie County coroner Brian Baxter is in contact with the Lucas County Coroner's Office to conduct an autopsy. It wasn't immediately clear when that autopsy would occur.
