Sosa's title tops list of local regional qualifiers

OAK HARBOR — Lilly Sosa claimed the area's lone win and six other Clyde entries gained regional berths Saturday on the second day of the Division II district track meet.Sosa captured the pole vault (10-8) to help the Lady Red end third in the team standings with 62 1/2 points.Shelby outlasted host Oak Harbor 78-75 for the top team spot. Clyde and Fostoria tied for 12th with 16 points each and Upper Sandusky ended 18th (12).The top four in each event qualified for the regional meet in Lexington, which starts Thursday.Four other Bellevue individuals will join Sosa at the regional meet.Hallie McCarthy captured second in the 300 hurdles (46.32) and Natalie Littlejohn did the same in the jump (16-6).Kameron Koch added a third in the 800 (2:25.88), and Amerie Wagner ran fourth in the 400 (58.22).The Lady Red also advanced in the 4x200 and the 4x400.The 4x200 team of Katelyn Turner, Brooke Brown, McCarthy and Wagner claimed runner-up honors (1:43.92).Wagner, Brooke Brown, Katelyn Turner and McCarthy clocked in fourth in the 4x400 (4:04.07).Fifths went to Reese Meacham in the 3,200 (11:40.34), and the 4x100 team of Turner, Brown, Sosa and McCarthy (50.46).Clyde's 4x200 team of Anabelle Zieber, Jolene Brennan, Gabby Griffin and Bree Caudill gained a regional berth by finishing fourth (1:46.07).The same group of Fliers also took sixth in the 4x400 (4:09.8).Griffin added a fifth in the 200 (25.89) and an eighth in the 100 (12.95).Pole vaulter Braylee Laughlin wound up seventh (9-0).Azhzenet Hatter of Fostoria crossed the line third in the 300 hurdles (46.44).Maliyah Payne added a seventh in the 400 (1:01.76) for the Redmen.Upper Sandusky pole vaulter Shiloh Shasteen finished fifth (9-6).Jocelyn Leightey ran sixth in the 200 (26.32) and eighth in the 400 (1:03.07) and helped the 4x200 team end eighth (1:49.46).Shasteen, Arielle O'Flaherty and Kimberly Thomas filled out the relay for the Rams.Lia Wilkinson took sixth in the 100 hurdles (17.11). Holsinger races off to regionalADA — Elysa Holsinger gained Carey's lone regional berth in Saturday's portion of the Division III district track meet.Holsinger captured second in the 300 hurdles (46.55) to earn a trip to the regional meet in Fostoria, which begins Wednesday.The top four in each event advanced to the regional.Holsinger also anchored the 4x400 team that took fifth (4:20.28), as well as the 4x200 (1:51.65) and 4x100 (53.09) squads that each ended sixth.Grier Blankemeyer joined her on all three relays.Addison Baldridge and Bella Phoenix helped round out the 4x400 and 4x200 for Carey.Sophia Klein and Riley Yost filled out the 4x100.Chloe Etzinger added a seventh in the 3,200 (13:30.37) for the Blue Devils. Smith places twice at national D-II meetPUEBLO, Colorado — University of Findlay sophomore and Calvert graduate Leah Smith placed in two races Saturday at the NCAA Division II National Outdoor Track & Field Championships.Smith took fifth in the 100 (11.32) and ran on the 4x400 team for the Oilers that claimed fourth (3:33.72).Taylor Ivory, Jordan Taylor and Kylie Ray also ran on the relay for UF. Rams outlast Elida in 10 inningsUPPER SANDUSKY — Upper Sandusky scored once in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game, then plated two runs with two outs in the 10th Saturday to clip Elida 4-3 in a Division IV sectional final.The Rams (16-4) advance to play Van Wert in Wednesday's 4:30 p.m. district semifinal at Fort Jennings.Both teams had their chances Saturday.Upper Sandusky struck first with a run in the third, but the Bulldogs (15-12) answered with single runs in the sixth and seventh to go up 2-1.Neither team scored in the eighth or ninth after the Rams tied the game in the bottom of the seventh.Elida inched ahead with a run in the top of the 10th before Upper Sandusky rallied to get the win.Elida starter Ryan McGue struck out 17 and allowed just four hits and two walks over eight innings. Colton Graham suffered the loss in 1 2/3 innings of relief. Both allowed two unearned runs and were hampered by their team's four errors.The Bulldogs also belted four doubles among their eight hits. Jonan Snyder lined two doubles and Graham and Gabe Miley each had one, but none of them scored. Miley did drive in a run.McGue scored twice and singled. Gavin Trickle singled and Marc Troyer had an RBI.Upper Sandusky committed five errors, but starter Josh Heilman struck out seven over 9 1/3 innings and the Rams strung their hits and walks together with Elida's miscues just enough to stay in the game.Kasen Gottfried singled twice and scored for the Rams, Justin Heilman singled and scored, Kaleb Francis and Caine Rupe each scored, Nate Lewis had a single and RBI and Josh Heilman singled twice.Justin Heilman picked up the win in relief, facing four batters and getting the final two outs in the top of the 10th. Mohawk sweep Royals, gains share of N10BUCYRUS — Mohawk dropped Wynford 3-1 in the first game Saturday, then blanked the Royals 4-0 in the second Saturday.The opener concluded a conference game between the two, giving the Warriors a share of the Northern 10 Athletic Conference with Upper Sandusky.It took nearly three weeks to make it happen, however.The first game originally started May 5, but was suspended with a scoreless tie in the fourth inning due to rain.The teams were supposed to resume that game Thursday, but weather again forced it and Friday's game between the two to be rescheduled for Saturday.All of the runs in the first game came in the fifth inning.Reliever Kaleb Bish struck out four to get the win for Mohawk (12-2 N10). Starter Andon Clouse struck out six.Owen Patrizi drove in two runs, scored and singled for the Warriors, Kaleb Bish singled twice, Hunter Haynes and Levi Tiell both scored, and Kaden Bish and Ben Bogner each singled.Brayden Campbell took the loss for the Royals, fanning seven in a complete-game effort. He didn't allow any earned runs.Hunter Routson doubled twice and scored, Jackson Rayborn had a single and RBI, and Gage Massey, Drew Pope and Collin Hulsmeyer all singled.Mohawk snapped a scoreless tie in the second game, a non-conference matchup, with three runs in the fourth and added another in the fifth.Haynes went the distance for the win, striking out six and scattering three hits and two walks.Kaden Bish doubled, singled, scored and drove in two runs to lead Mohawk (20-5).Kaleb Bish went 2 for 3 with a double and run, Patrizi doubled and singled, Lance Frankart ended 3 for 4 with an RBI, Haynes singled twice and scored, Bogner doubled and Tiell scored.Middle reliever Reed Johnson suffered the loss for the Royals, allowing three unearned runs and one earned run.Routson singled twice and Hulsmeyer singled. Tigers clip Warriors in 8th inningGALION – Allen Carver's walk-off double lifted Galion to a 4-3 win over visiting Mohawk Monday in eight innings.Kaden Bish led the Warriors (20-6) with a double, a single and an RBI, while Levi Tiell doubled, Hunter Haynes lined a single and Lance Frankart had an RBI.Andon Clouse suffered the loss in his 6 1/3 innings of work. He allowed two runs on six hits with five strikeouts.
