Calvert blows by Tornadoes 19-1

All for one.On Memorial Day, the crosstown battle lines had been drawn between the two schools in Tiffin: Columbian and Calvert. The rivalry between the schools was set aside for the day though as It was for a good cause as they raised money for the Seneca County Honor Bus, which helps send veterans to Washington D.C.Calvert ultimately came out the winner, as it blew the wind out of the Tornadoes 19-1 Monday at Tornado Field."We have been practicing really hard," Calvert coach Leah Bouillon said. "We are in the midst of a tournament run right now. With that, it's all about discipline at the plate, discipline on the field and with today's game, everybody that is on our roster did that, and I'm very proud of them."The Senecas (22-4) took the lead early on. Addie Endicott scored on an Ava Eilrich double that went to left field. Senior Addison King came up to bat and smacked a fly ball to left, and got the first two RBIs of the game when both Eilrich and Alyssa Rishty ran for home.Gracie Miller hammered a home run over the fence to left field. It was her first of two on the day. After Calvert retired the first three batters of the Tornadoes in the first inning, it was right back to business.Miller hit another home run over the fence in left field. It brought Eilrich and Bella Steyer through for runs.The only run that the Tornadoes (10-17) were able to get against the tough defense of the Senecas started in the second inning. Emma Daugherty smacked a double to left field. She stole third base on a Laela Haman ground ball that went just past the base. Haman got tagged out trying to steal second when Miller threw the ball to Claire Schoenberger, but that didn't stop Columbian from making a last-minute play. Corrine Plotts tattooed a ground ball to the left side and it was enough to bring Daugherty home."We wish we would have had a better showing," Columbian assistant coach Kate Focht said. "Especially coming out and competing in front of our community. It's nice to compete, but we were disappointed with the outcome. We wanted to have a stronger showing for our seniors, especially since this is the last game that they get to play on their home field. I think that was tough, but I think we were also glad to be able to come out and compete for a good cause."Calvert retook control. Endicott hit a double to left field. Scarlett Faber nailed a line drive to TC's shortstop while Endicott made it to third base. Rishty whacked the ball over the fence for a home run, and got two RBIs as Endicott and Scarlett Faber put runs on.The score at that point was 11-1.Calvert tacked on an additional eight runs in the fifth inning. Eilrich whacked the ball over the fence and got an RBI as Rishty came into home plate.Later, Addison Sheets hit a line drive out to center field, and Bella Steyer rounded third base and made it to home plate. Scarlett Faber smacked a fly ball to the left field near the fence, which brought her sister Savannah Faber and teammate Mya Steyer home. Rishty then smacked a ground ball out towards third base, which went in and out of the glove, and that error allowed Grace Wood to get a run in. The final run for Calvert came right after that play. Eilrich hit a single out to left field towards the fence and both Rishty and Savannah Faber sprinted through to home plate."Today though was much bigger than just softball," Bouillon said. "We are so thankful to be a part of it and so thankful to have the opportunity that Curt (Mellott), along with the rest of the Columbian and Calvert did to get this day."When it comes to Columbian and Calvert, there is a nice rivalry," Bouillon said. "What I mean by that is we are so supportive of each other, but when we come together, it's great games. When it comes to volleyball, it's great games, when it comes to basketball scrimmages, it's great games, and then you see this incredible thing for baseball and softball. There is so much more to life, and that's what I try to teach to the kids. When you get to do something like this, how much of an impact it has on the community, there is a great group of people that we get to celebrate and celebrate the group of people that made the sacrifice so we can play the game of softball."Focht echoed the sentiment."I'm really proud that our community puts this on and to be able to do charitable things through baseball and softball is a good life lesson for the kids," Focht said. "I'm really proud to be a part of this. I'm glad our softball players have a sense of selflessness and to be able to give back to the community is part of that. We raised money all year long for such a good cause. Giving back to the veterans who have given their lives for our country is something honorable."While Columbian's season ended in Willard when it fell to Norwalk 8-7, Calvert still has at least one more game to play -- a D-VII regional semifinal at BGSU against Ayersville at 5 p.m. Wednesday."It's been a while, it's a stepping stone," said Bouillon of going to regionals. "We are never satisfied and we are hungry for it. This group of girls is special and to be able to play day in and day out, and they are amazing kids on and off the field. We are going to run our same discipline level and we are going to play Calvert softball, and thank the Lord that we have the opportunity to play as one."
