Ewald claims regional discus championship

FOSTORIA — Aiden Ewald's title for Hopewell-Loudon in the discus topped a list of three state qualifiers and several other area entries earned trips to Friday's finals on the first day of the Division III regional meet.Ewald's championship came in the discus with a winning throw of 174-2.Calvert's Lukas Stultz and Old Fort's Evan Combs each claimed a runner-up honor.Stultz's came in the long jump with a leap of 21-9 1/2, while Combs took second in the pole vault by clearing 14-8.The top four in each event automatically qualify for next week's state meet at Ohio State University.Lakota's Braxton Quaintance took fifth in the pole vault (14-4) and will have to wait and see if he earns one of the two at-large bids for the state meet.Teammate Jalen Wagner added an eighth in the long jump (20-3 1/2).Lakota and Carey each sent five entries to Friday's regional finals.Make that 5 1/2 for Lakota.Lakota's King Beard and Vanlue's Owen Roszman must battle in a runoff Friday for the eighth and final spot in the meet's 200 final.Both ran identical times in separate preliminary heats Wednesday, down to the thousandth of a second — 23.188 seconds.The runoff is at 5:45 p.m., with the finals in the 200 set for 7:40 p.m.Lucas McEwan reached the finals in the 110 hurdles (14.98) and 300 hurdles (39.48) for Lakota.Teammate Donovan Statham will run in the 400 (50.54).The Raiders will also have Quaintance, Lucas McEwan, Wagner and Nate Grigson in the 4x100(44.32), and Brady Tyson, Beard, Avery Shilling and Statham in the 4x400 (3:28.72).Carey's Brody Baker and Tripp Phoenix each advanced in three races.Baker will run the 110 hurdles (15.27) and 300 hurdles (39.92), and Phoenix will compete in the 100 (11.07).Both are also part of the 4x200 (1:30.76), with Phoenix also leading off the 4x100 (44.08).Dalen Walter and Bryce Puckett are also on both relays, with Eli Steen helping out on the 4x100. SE's 4x800, BC's Bloomfield gain regional titlesNORTH ROYALTON — Seneca East's 4x800 team and Buckeye Central's Corbin Bloomfield each claimed titles to top a list of four area state qualifiers on the first day of the Division III regional meet.Evan Schiefer, Bradley Smith, Ayden Perkins and Owen Gahring of Seneca East took the 4x800 in a stadium record of 7:59.78 to earn their trip to next week's state meet.The Tigers broke the mark of 8:31.5 set by Nordonia earlier this year.They'll be joined at state by teammate Brett Martin, who took third in the discus (158-2).The top four in each event advance to state, which begins next Friday at Ohio State University.Bloomfield captured the long jump with a leap of 22-3 1/2. That distance bettered the previous stadium record of 21-3 set by North Royalton's Nicholas Plaza earlier this year.Mohawk's 4x800 team of Brayden Cleveland, Jett Loesser, Garrett Rinehart and Phoenix Nally finished fourth (8:04.23) to earn a state bid.Seneca East pole vaulter Ethan Shultz finished fifth (13-0).Three other area entries qualified for Friday's regional finals.Seneca East earned two of them — the 4x100 team of Bryler Beamer, Levi Dawson, Taylor Young and Ethan Shultz (44.3), and the 4x400 team of Beamer, Smith, Andrew Fay and Gahring (3:29.35)Mohawk's Braxton Jenkins also moved on in the 300 hurdles (41.14). Schubach leaps to regional crownFOSTORIA — New Riegel's Macy Schubach gained a regional title to earn the area's lone state berth Wednesday on the first day of the Division III regional meet.The meet resumes Friday, with the top four in each event qualifying for next week's state meet at Ohio State University.Schubach earned her trip there by clearing 5-2 to capture the high jump title.Other local teams had entries advance to Friday's regional finals.Calvert heads up that list with four finalists.Farrah Gaulden has a part in three of them for the Senecas, qualifying in the 100 hurdles (15.82) and running legs on the 4x200 (1:45.95) and 4x100 (51.21) teams.Avery Elchert and Karris Marinis will join her on both relays. Emily Miller will fill out the 4x200, and Carleigh Meier will round out the 4x100.Miller also advanced to the finals in the 400 (59.17).Aubrey Vitte of Lakota advanced to the finals in the 100 (12.67) and 200 (26.08).She'll be joined in the 200 by Hopewell-Loudon's Savanna Cook (26.66).Carey's Elysa Holsinger qualified in the 300 hurdles (46.65).The Seneca East 4x100 team of Isabel Stockmaster, Sayge Miller, Quinlan Burroughs and Cami Lantz also reached Friday's portion of the meet (51.42). Newlove has hand in three regional finalistsPORT CLINTON — Jack Newlove advanced to the finals in one race and helped Columbian get there in two relays Wednesday on the first day of the Division I regional meet.Newlove reached the finals in the 300 hurdles (38.38).He, DaShawn Russell and Ryan Hook also helped the Tornadoes advance to the finals in the 4x200 (1:30.06) and the 4x400 (3:24.77).Xavier Matthewson anchored the 4x200, and Xavier Melick anchored the 4x400 for TC.The regional meet resumes Friday.
