Science comes to life

CLYDE — The hallway walls surrounding the science classrooms at Clyde High School were bare at one time. It was a long, light blue hallway with no lockers or decorations. It appeared sterile and uninspiring. About 11 years ago, the science teachers brainstormed several ideas and landed on the idea of adding a mural. Now, a 344-foot mural brings the space to life. Teacher Ward Widmer had the original idea for the mural to show a timeline. Teachers, students and visitors walking through the science department can observe illustrations of the Big Bang, formation of stars, galaxies and constellations. Then the mural transitions to planet Earth — starting with bacteria, plants, early aquatic life, early terrestrial life and the Jurassic period. "The science teachers tried to incorporate as many science concepts in the mural as possible including a solar eclipse, aurora borealis, DNA, plate tectonics, phases of the moon, a tsunami and a tornado," said teacher Ann Kauble. The mural ends with a painting of the state of Ohio, which incorporates scientific information like the state flower, state bird, astronauts Neil Armstrong and John Glenn, agriculture, glacial grooves and Lake Erie fishing. There's something different to look at with every pass through the hallway. "The I Spy list painted on the wall has been a fun way for students to take a closer look at the mural," Kauble said. The project was done in three phases by artist Beth Sage. Together, it's the biggest mural she has ever painted. Phase 1 was done in 2014, Phase 2 finished in 2015, and Phase 3 was completed in April. Sage said she enjoyed Phase 3 the most because it was challenging. She also noted her positive experience while painting at the high school. "Sometimes the high school kids talk to you, and sometimes they don't," Sage said, referencing that she has painted murals in numerous schools. "These students were asking questions, and the same groups would come every day and talk to me. They were wonderful and respectful. I was so impressed." During the development process, science teachers would make sketches and share them with Sage. She was able to bring their vision to life. "None of this would have been possible without the talents of Beth Sage," Kauble said. The high school's science club, along with FFA, Varsity C and community donations, paid for the mural. No school money was used for the mural, Kauble said. "I am very proud of this project," Kauble said. "This was truly a group project among science teachers, Beth Sage, community member donors and administration."
