Fostoria table tennis champ highlights Ohio Senior Olympics

FOSTORIA — At 77, Fostoria native Dennis Cline continues to show his competitive spirit— both on and off the table tennis court. In 2025, Cline claimed gold in both singles (75–79 division) and doubles at the Ohio Senior Olympics, going undefeated in round-robin play. The win marks his third consecutive top finish—silver in 2023, followed by gold in 2024 and 2025. Partnered with Bob New of Sidney — who had previously been his opponent — Cline's team secured first place in doubles. New also finished first in his singles division (80–84). "This is an off year for qualifying, so I felt like participation was a little lower than usual, but it still had a good turnout," Cline said of this year's competition. Statewide spotlight The Ohio Senior Olympics, a nonprofit organization founded in 1979, is part of the National Senior Games Association. Its mission is "to promote healthy lifestyles and physical activity for Ohioans age 50 and over and to provide top-quality athletic competition," according to their website. Each summer, the Senior Olympics features more than 20 sports — from table tennis and track and field to archery, cornhole, golf, swimming and more. Events are held at various locations across Ohio between May and September. Participants must be at least 50 years old. While based in Ohio, the events are open to both residents and out-of-state athletes. Registration typically opens in mid-March, with entry deadlines two to three weeks before each event. Entry fees start at $70 per sport. More than medals While Cline takes pride in his hardware, he said the real value of the games lies in the community they foster. "There are people I've met through this who've become real friends," he said. "You hear stories, share laughs and cheer each other on. We've all found peace in each other, kindness, friendship — and a love for the sport." He hopes his success will inspire more seniors to get involved, not just for physical activity, but also for the mental and social benefits. "It not only gives seniors something to do physically, but it can add to the social aspect of their lives as well," he said. Looking ahead Though this year is a non-qualifying year for nationals, nearly 1,000 athletes still participated in the Ohio games. Next year's events will serve as qualifiers for the 2027 National Senior Games in Tulsa, Okla. Whether newcomers are picking up a paddle for the first time or returning for another year of competition, organizers say the experience is built to be inclusive. "Everyone has an opportunity or desire to compete, and this gives people well into their mature years that opportunity," said Ohio Senior Olympics Executive Director Dina Hanks. "Whether they shoot pool, play cornhole, run a 50-meter dash or swim in a pool, we have something where you can stay active and fit and compete for years to come." Hanks also reflected on the deep-rooted community within the Ohio Senior Olympics, sharing the story of a participant who had competed in every event since the games' beginnings in 1980. "He was a true inspiration — a lifelong athlete and encourager who brought many others to the games," she said. Even after his passing last year, his legacy continues through his family, with his daughter and wife staying involved to carry on the tradition.
