Cooling stations open

SANDUSKY — Those in Ottawa County and Sandusky both have open cooling stations for community members during the heatwave. The Ottawa County Family Advocacy Center, 570 S. McKinley Drive, and the New Jerusalem Baptist Church, at 1920 Eddy Henry Way, are open today through Wednesday for those looking to get out of the heat. The Ottawa County Family Advocacy Center is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the church in Sandusky is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. All ages are welcome to use the facilities to get out of the heat. The family advocacy center also offers refreshing beverages. The Sandusky Transit and police can provide transportation to those who may need it. Sandusky's stations in located near the Buchanan/Camp bus stop on the Purple Line and the Pierce/Hayes stop on the Green Line. Questions on Sandusky's station can be directed to Dora Grant at 419-239-5567. "Serving as a cooling station reflects our mission to uplift our community," Connie Roe, Executive Director, said. "We're proud to offer this space where families can find relief and stay safe during extreme weather." The city of Sandusky also shared a list of tips to stay safe in the heat: • Stay hydrated • Stay indoors • Dress appropriately • Avoid strenuous activities • Use fans and cool clothes • Check on others • Know the signs of heat-related illnesses Other municipalities released info on cooling shelters: Norwalk The city, in a post online Friday, said the following locations can be used as cooling stations this week: • Norwalk Police Department, 37 N. Linwood Ave. • Norwalk Fire Department, 108 Whittlesey Ave. • Norwalk Parks and Rec Department (Ernsthausen Recreation Center), 100 Republic St. The city noted that people would not be able to use the pool or recreational amenities at the rec center without paid admission, unless they are already a member. "Check in at the front desk and they will allow you in the large gymnasium," the city's post states. The post did not specify what times the stations would be open. Monroeville The village administration released this: Monroeville Mayor Joe Galea wishes to remind residents The Monroeville Municipal Complex will be available as a cooling center during next week's high heat event. The MMC, located at 21 North Main Street, will be open between 8:00 AM and 4:30 PM for individuals who might need a break from the high temperatures.
