SENECA COUNTY — As the Fourth of July nears, residents across Seneca County are preparing for celebrations, but depending on your location, the rules around fireworks vary. While state law permits the use of consumer-grade fireworks on certain holidays, local governments have the authority to impose stricter regulations. Sheriff Fred Stevens confirmed that residents may use fireworks on approved holidays, provided they follow safety rules. "Fireworks can be discharged on private property with permission," Stevens said. "But not on public land like parks or schools unless authorized." He emphasized that minors under 18 are not allowed to handle fireworks or be within 150 feet of active displays. "Always follow safety guidelines, know your local rules, and enjoy fireworks responsibly," he added. Tiffin The city of Tiffin has opted out of the state law and continues to ban the discharge of fireworks within city limits. "Tiffin continues to prohibit the discharge of fireworks," said Police Chief David Pauly. "Anyone who uses fireworks within the city may be cited or charged under city ordinance." Violations are classified as a first-degree misdemeanor. He also highlighted safety concerns, noting that fireworks cause an estimated 19,500 fires annually and disproportionately injure children. Pauly encouraged residents to attend the city's official fireworks display at Hedges-Boyer Park, where professionals will conduct the show safely. Fostoria Unlike Tiffin, the City of Fostoria has not banned fireworks and allows their use following state law. Residents can discharge consumer-grade fireworks on approved holidays, on private property with permission. Police Chief Gabe Wedge urged residents to be mindful of their neighbors. "I just ask those who are participating in the use of fireworks to do so responsibly," Wedge said. "Be kind to your neighbors, especially those living near veterans and individuals with developmental disabilities, like autism." Fostoria's municipal code also outlines procedures for licensed public exhibitions, requiring permits, inspections, and insurance. However, private use of fireworks on designated holidays is permitted under city law.
