Library offering 3-D printers for patrons' use

TIFFIN — Ever wondered what it would be like to be able to print your own 3-D objects? Seneca County residents will have to wait no longer. Starting Sept. 2, the Tiffin-Seneca Public Library will offer usage of its two new 3-D printers to any library card holder for the price of the filament used, starting at 10 cents per gram. According to library community relations manager Kayleigh Tschanen-Feasel, the printers will have the capabilities to print most things, however there will be some restrictions. "The item must be suitable for a public area," Tschanen-Feasel said. Library technology trainer Hayle Lucas said the printers will be made available to patrons to make simple household tools like bookmarks, figurines or small toys that can be made using any CAD software or downloaded from websites like Thingiverse or Maker World. "One printer was approved for purchase last year and another printer was purchased shortly after," Lucas said. One printer cost approximately $500 and the other cost $300. Lucas said there will be 25 different colors to choose from with an expected turnaround time ranging from 7-14 business days. Lucas also reported the library is planning to offer classes to teach patrons more about the printers and how to use them.
