Nye's Week 2 high school football power rankings

And just like that … we're off and running with another high school football season.Week 1 is always an interesting one because you think you know a team by their scrimmages, who they have back, but in reality, you don't really know what kind of team it is until they play an opponent for four quarters. Other than Hopewell-Loudon, who had an impressive start to the season in a lopsided win over Carey, my Week 1 picks didn't exactly go that well. I don't think my preseason rankings were all that much better, but that's why its preseason. A lot of what ifs and maybes.But some teams had some big wins to begin the season, and some teams didn't look that great. But there's a long way to go yet.Preseason rankings: 1. H-L 2. Carey 3. Calvert 4. Clyde 5. Mohawk 6. Seneca East 7. Columbian 8. Lakota 9. Upper Sandusky 10. Bellevue 11. Buckeye Central 12. FostoriaJust to reiterate, this isn't a list of who I believe would win head-to-head as we have teams from Division III to Division VII, but it's how good I believe the team is and how well their season is going.So, for Week 2, let's ride:1. H-L (1-0): As I prefaced up top in the introduction, it's not a surprise that the Chieftains are the No. 1 team in the power rankings. Now I know Carey dealt with a major injury and a lot of cramping, which certainly hindered its ability to stay in the game Friday, but even with top target Jack Colatruglio sidelined with an injury, the passing game couldn't be stopped. Jacoby Ellis, who had an incredibly efficient night passing, tossed for five scores – four to junior Brody Brickman. It was his first career start. But after Carey scored on the opening drive, it didn't score again the rest of the way. There's just a lot to like about the Chieftains.2. Mohawk (1-0): I certainly didn't think Mohawk-Calvert would be a running clock kind of game. However, from the first quarter Mohawk looked ready to go and dominated. I was especially surprised how the Warriors handled the Senecas up front and controlled the line of scrimmage. I told several people Thursday night, I had only known Andon Clouse from baseball, so I had no idea he was that kind of athlete. He was in total command of the offense with his arm and his legs. If that team shows up every game this year, Mohawk will be right in the hunt again in the N10.3. Seneca East (1-0): Now to the most interesting game of the whole weekend: Seneca East's 2-0 win over Ashland Crestview. I don't believe I've ever seen a 2-0 game before, at least on the football field. There was a lot of positives to take from the defensive side of the ball … offense not so much. But it's easier to fix things after a win than the alternative. 4. Carey (0-1): This is a tough one because a lot of where I would put Carey depends on the health of all-Ohio back Eli Steen. He injured his knee vs. H-L and didn't return. However, the Blue Devils have some depth at running back, but he would be a tough player to try to replace. 5. Bellevue (1-0): The team that made the biggest jump had to be Bellevue. Going on the road at rival Clyde with a brand new coach and winning impressively is not something I thought would happen. Neither did Clyde, probably. The Redmen, led by Ike Brown at QB, could be back, but after just one week we might wanna chill a little bit first. They have Wauseon and then a great Shelby squad in Week 3.6. Calvert (0-1): I believe the word "patience" is what I'm looking for with Calvert. The potential is there for the Senecas, but it might take a bit to get there. However, with such a nasty four-game stretch to start the season, there isn't much time for Calvert to find its identity. Charlie Palm played OK in his first start at QB, but without any semblance of a running game, that put too much pressure on him and Mohawk pinned its ears back and got after him. But it doesn't get any easier this week with a trip to Monroeville.7. Clyde (0-1): It's just one week, but it had to be a painful loss to Bellevue last Friday. But there's a long way to go this season and Clyde usually gets right against Toledo Start. I expect the same this Friday.8. Columbian (0-1): I wasn't at Fremont Ross Friday, but it sounded like Columbian certainly had a chance or at least a few chances to win, but came up a little short. Like Calvert, TC might take some time to mold into what team it will look like, but with Bishop Watterson and Medina Buckeye on the horizon in Weeks 3-4, this could be a must-win already in Week 2 as TC hosts Mansfield Senior. Every game is important, but this one is really important for the Tornadoes to gain some confidence.9. Lakota (1-0): Lakota beat the heck out of Elmwood Friday. It's a team with some talented players back from last year, which was coach Ryan Lozier's first season. Now in Year 2, things could be turning around. We'll wait and see on the Raiders, at least until they get into league play.10. Buckeye Central (1-0): How about the Bucks? They got revenge on Crestline after the Bulldogs smoked them last season. But like usual with BC, let's wait and see when it gets into the meatgrinder N10 schedule.11. Upper Sandusky (0-1): Northmor is a solid program, so a loss against the Knights isn't really a bad loss in Upper's case. But the Rams didn't manage to score a point, so I'm not really sure how good the Rams are or could be at this point. They should get right vs. Mt. Gilead this week.12. Fostoria (0-1): It wasn't the start I'm sure the players or coach Derek Angelone wanted last week at Van Buren. But the Redmen have a chance to prove they're not the same team with a home matchup with Port Clinton Friday. Things have to turn around at some point...
