Senecas earn huge road win

MONROEVILLE - It was like last week never happened.Calvert came in ready to play and came out victorious against Monroeville 35-21 Friday on the road in non-conference play."That loss we had last week … we went into the locker room, locked the door and got to work," Senecas coach Mike Lento said. "I couldn't be more proud of the kids and the coaches for turning it around."The first half seemed plagued with problems for the Eagles (1-1). As soon as Calvert (1-1) received the ball, Charlie Palm connected with AJ Shoemaker for a 62-yard touchdown as Shoemaker ran it up the middle. That was within the first minute of the game, but the point after was no good.Monroeville got the ball and turned it over on fourth down-and-four from the 46. Connor Bores was sacked for a yard, which put the Senecas at great field position.From there, their first-and-10 turned into a big play for Monroeville. As Palm threw the ball to Max Griffin, it bounced off his chest and Thomas Platte took the ball and ran it to the 17 yard line. After a pass from Colton Clark to Blake Ackerman got it within the range, it was two plays later that Conor Bores ran the ball in for three yards. The point after was good from Maverick Myers.With 3:54 left in the first quarter, the Senecas wanted to make one last run at it. To get things started, they started on their own 40 yard line. A few plays later, on a first-and-10, Palm threw a 26-yard pass to Tucker Coleman, which got them to the 14-yard line.But time expired before they could finish the drive.The second quarter was all Calvert. Palm carried the ball up and in two more times before he got a four yard touchdown rush. This time, Cameron Lucius's point after was good.Monroeville then turned the ball over on its first possession of the quarter, and Calvert capitalized on it. This time, the Senecas were on a fourth-and-18 situation at the 36 yard line, after penalties and failed passes. Lucius had doubters, but he made a 46-yard field goal attempt a reality, and that bumped Calvert up 16-7.The Eagles then punted, but it fell into the hands of Logan DeMoss.DeMoss ran the ball all the way up the field and into the end zone for a 77-yard touchdown. The point after was good as well, and it seemed like Monroeville was put into a hole of 22-7.The Eagles turned it over again on downs, and with 1:49 remaining, Clark tried for a big play, but instead, the ball was intercepted by Shoemaker. The Senecas ran out of time and ended the half on a third down.In the third quarter, Monroeville came out of the locker room rather fired up. They ate up three minutes and 42 seconds, but they turned a second-and-6 on the 20 yard line into an opportunity. A pass to Clark was good for 27 yards, which moved them to a first-and-goal on the three yard line. Bores ran it in, and the Eagles decided to go for two points. Colton Koch, the freshman quarterback, threw it to Clark from three yards out to make it 23-15.Calvert answered back on the next possession. After a facemask penalty from Monroeville, it moved the ball from the 44 to the 24. Nolan Lee carried it to no success. Third-and-14 and Palm found DeMoss for a 28-yard pass for a touchdown. The point after was blocked.Calvert with 10:15 left in the game, Lee ran up the middle uncontested for a 26-yard touchdown, though Lucius's kick was blocked.Monroeville scored again, but it was too late."We have tiny mistakes we have to clean up," Lento said. "We are playing a tough Norwalk St. Paul team next week, and the little mistakes we made tonight, can't happen against them."
