Columbian teacher earns statewide award

TIFFIN — Chris Monsour, a longtime science teacher at Tiffin-Columbian High School, has been named the 2026 Ohio Teacher of the Year, the first time an educator from the district has received the honor. Monsour, who has taught at TCS for 26 years, was named one of four finalists in July. The Ohio Department of Education and Workforce announced the winner Tuesday. A self-described "tough teacher," Monsour teaches biology, environmental science, anatomy and physiology. He was honored during a surprise pep rally at Columbian High School, where local and state leaders gathered to celebrate. Guests included State Sen. Bill Reineke, Seneca County Commissioners Tony Paradiso, Bill Frankart and Brent Busdeker, Tiffin Mayor Lee Wilkinson, members of the Tiffin City Schools Board of Education and Ohio Superintendent of Public Instruction Paul Craft. Principal Michelle Tuite opened the program, praising Monsour's dedication. "I'm honored to have worked with Chris for so many years," she said. "This recognition is so well deserved." Reineke presented Monsour with a proclamation and shared a personal story about his career before Monsour accepted the award. "Every student has inspired me, and my students continue to inspire me daily," Monsour said. "I am just as grateful to the staff I work alongside. In this field, you have to work as a team in order to be successful, and I hope to return the favor as the representative for educators across the state." He also joked about how far he has come since his career began. "If you told me I would be standing here 26 years ago, I probably would have laughed in your face," he said. As Teacher of the Year, Monsour will travel to Columbus, Washington, D.C., and other locations to advocate for Ohio educators. The Ohio Teacher of the Year program, run by the State Board of Education and Workforce, has recognized outstanding educators since 1964.
