Pan Yan Bookstore marks three years in Tiffin

TIFFIN — Pan Yan Bookstore, named after Tiffin's first registered business, the Pan Yan Tavern, recently celebrated its third anniversary. The store, which opened Sept. 8, 2022, marked the occasion with a birthday party featuring bookstore-themed activities, including a bookmark-making station, scavenger hunt, used book deals and more. Store manager Penelope Logsdon, who joined the team in January 2023, said customer service is central to her role. "Not only are we directly serving customers at the counter or by making recommendations, but we also are unboxing the books and, in a way, curating the inventory to fit our customers," she said. Logsdon added that much of the work happens behind the scenes — from updating displays and shelving to creating a comfortable space for browsing. Staff member Taylor Fitch, who became an employee after being a regular customer, said the store's events keep things exciting. "I can't even pick a favorite part of this place– I feel like with every event, there is always something going on, it stays busy, and it is always a fun time," Fitch said. She also mentioned the store's upcoming Horror Spooktacular Author Event, scheduled for 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18. Fitch explained that the event "serves as a way for interested horror and thriller authors to showcase their books while finding new readers." "We take a look at what the customer is asking for, and at what shelves are moving the fastest to know which genres to stock the most of," she said. She added that pre-order requests also help staff stay informed about upcoming releases. Logsdon emphasized that Pan Yan is more than just a bookstore — it's a community space. Since opening, the store has hosted book clubs, author signings and other events. "A big thing for us is our used books collection, all of these books come from people in the community," she said. Proceeds from used book sales are currently being saved for new projects, including a recently announced bookmobile. More details are expected soon. As Logsdon reflected on the store's community support, a customer walked in to donate books, saying, "I know they'll find a good home here." The store also features a "Blind Date with a Book" section, where customers choose a mystery book wrapped with bookmarks, stickers and other surprises — turning the purchase into an experience. Looking back on the past three years, Logsdon said the store's success wouldn't be possible without the people who support it. "Pan Yan is much more than just a bookstore, but a community and welcoming space for everyone," she said.
