Lot owners asked to remove Fountain Cemetery decorationsFOSTORIA — The city of Fostoria's Cemetery and Parks Department is asking that those owning lots at Fountain Cemetery remove all summer decorations prior to the department's Oct. 6 cleanup day.Cemetery employees on the cleanup day will dispose of any remaining items except those directly on the stones.Lot owners are also asked to wait until Oct. 10 before placing fall/winter decorations. 'Birthday Paw-ty' for Wood museum cat slated for ThursdayBOWLING GREEN — A free "birthday paw-ty" for Wood County Museum mascot Peaches, a barn cat which "adopted" the museum as his home about two years ago, is scheduled for 4 to 7 p.m., Thursday at the museum, located at 13660 County Home Road.Cake, cookies, punch and cotton candy donated by Awesome Sauce Sugar Floss will be available, with the museum also accepting donations for Peaches' upkeep. Fifty percent of the proceeds will go to For the Love of Cats, a local organization that aims to reduce the free roaming cat population through its trap-neuter-return program. Peaches is a TNR cat who is cared for by museum staff and community members.The party will also include a cat food and supply drive for the museum. Heidelberg to celebrate 'Jurassic Berg' Homecoming Oct. 3-5 Heidelberg University will welcome back alumni and friends Oct. 3-5 for Homecoming Weekend, with this years theme titled "Jurassic Berg." Events are scheduled to begin Friday with the dedication and ribbon-cutting of the new Athletics, Academic, and Recreation Center (Fieldhouse) at 2 p.m., followed by the annual Greek Sing showcase in the evening. Saturday's festivities include alumni tours of the Fieldhouse, a new "Heidelberg Hugs at the H" celebration for alumni couples, the traditional parade down Greenfield Street at 11 a.m., and family activities at the Saurwein Health & Wellness Center. Athletic events include men's soccer vs. Wilmington at 1 p.m. and football vs. Capital at 1:30 p.m. in Hoernemann Stadium, where the Alumni Band will perform at halftime and Homecoming royalty will be crowned. The weekend wraps up Sunday with the Alumni Council fall meeting and the School of Music & Theatre Gala at 2 p.m. at Trinity United Church of Christ, featuring the Berg Bravo! Distinguished Career Awards. Rotary Club launches literacy project for third graders The Rotary Club of Tiffin has launched a Third Grade Literacy Project in local public and parochial schools. Each third grader will receive a personal copy of Andy and Elmer's Apple Dumpling Adventure, a Rotary-themed storybook that emphasizes honesty, kindness, service, and literacy. Along with the book distribution, Rotarians will volunteer as reading partners to give students practice and help build confidence in their reading skills. "Reading at grade level by the end of third grade is one of the most important predictors of future success," said Pastor Charlene Thomas, Rotary Club president. "When students fall behind, the effects can last a lifetime. Our members are committed to supporting early literacy and helping young readers thrive."
