Disabilities board lead joins advocates in DC

TIFFIN — Local advocates, including Erin Simmons, president of the Seneca County Board of Developmental Disabilities, recently traveled to Washington, D.C. to meet with congressional offices about issues affecting Ohio families, children and local services. The trip centered on discussions about Medicaid funding, education resources and the potential impact of proposed budget and tax cuts. Advocates met with Congressman Jim Jordan and his legislative assistant, Sean Chilson, as well as Stanley Skocki, legislative assistant for Congressman Robert Latta. Each meeting lasted 30 to 40 minutes, giving advocates time to share their concerns and offer themselves as resources for future dialogue. According to the group, Medicaid and tax cuts pose challenges for county services in Ohio, which are funded about 60% through Medicaid and 40% through local taxes. Staffing shortages in schools and developmental service providers were highlighted as ongoing barriers to care. Families across the state face wait times of more than a year for essential medical and behavioral health services. Advocates also emphasized the long-term value of early intervention programs, which they said reduce costs while improving outcomes for children with developmental disabilities. "The message we were given was to be short and to the point," Simmons said. "I feel confident that they heard and saw my passion and fears for the uncertain future ahead of us. This was evident by the amount of time each spent engaged in conversations with us. It was an incredible experience, and I am honored to have been a part of it." The group left behind informational materials, including one-page summaries and contact information, to support continued conversations with lawmakers. SCBDD officials said the trip highlights the importance of bringing local perspectives to the national level and ensuring that the needs of individuals with developmental disabilities, their families and the community remain part of policy discussions.
