Fostoria students gain recognition Two Fostoria Junior/Senior High School students were recognized during this week's meeting of the Fostoria City Schools board of education for their intentions of joining the military after graduation in the spring.Jonathan Gundrum will be joining the U.S. Army and Kaleb Sanchez will be entering the U.S. Navy.Ellie McConaha and Marshall Postelwaite were recognized as Fostoria Elementary School students of the month. Also receiving recognition were Fostoria Academy students Armando Hernandez and Zoreilis and Korlias Velez. Wood Sheriff's Office testing soy tires BOWLING GREEN — The Wood County Sheriff's Office is testing soy-based tires for patrol vehicles after having been approached by the Ohio Soybean Council, a sheriff's office news release said."Thanks to the Ohio Soybean Council, we were able to receive a full set of tires for one of our patrol vehicles that are soy-based Goodyear tires, replacing petroleum oils with renewable soybeans," Sheriff Mark Wasylyshyn was quoted as saying in the release. "We are extremely grateful for the donation and proud to be using Ohio farmers' products on our patrol vehicle. A safe, environmentally friendly and cost-effective product just makes sense."The tires are manufactured in Ohio for the state's unpredictable weather and created to be able to handle the job for patrol vehicles through their innovative design, the release said. Wood County awards to be presented BOWLING GREEN — Eight individuals will receive Spirit of Wood County Awards at 2 p.m, Nov. 23 in the Alvin L. Perkins Atrium at the Wood County Courthouse complex.The Spirit of Wood County Awards are presented to current and former citizens of Wood County in recognition of outstanding service to their communities and Wood County. The awards have been presented since 1987. Nominations are accepted throughout the year.Those receiving awards from the Wood County commissioners are Steve Weihl, of Bowling Green, agricultural leadership; Martha Woelke, of Bowling Green, industrial/economic development; Cindy Hofner, of Bowling Green, self-government; James Rossler Jr., of Rossford, education for civic responsibility; Timothy Smith, of Tontogany, education for civic responsibility; Mark Reddin, of Liberty Township, liberty through law/human freedom; Rector Matthew Wahlgren, of Perrysburg, religion and liberty; and, Geoffrey Howes, of Bowling Green, Lyle R. West Independence to dedicate project's shoeboxes FOSTORIA — Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes will be dedicated Sunday at West Independence Church in Fostoria during the 9 a.m., worship service.West Independence Church, 22876 U.S. Route 224, is a Global Methodist Church. Its worship services are livestreamed on YouTube.A noisy offering will be taken Sunday for the church's Garage of Hope, which is now open from 10 a.m., to 2 p.m., on the first and second Fridays of each month. The Garage of Hope provides mattresses, bedding, furniture and other necessities for free to those in need.Barb Tardibuono will deliver Sunday's Children's Moments, based on scripture from Mark 4:26-34, followed by the Rev. Ben Wallick's sermon, titled "Mustard Seed Faith."After worship, those in attendance may gather for coffee fellowship in the Family Life Center.
