New Riegel band student to perform in Rose Parade

NEW RIEGEL — Kirsten King, a student and member of the band at New Riegel Local Schools, was recently selected as one of twenty trombonists in the Bands of America Honor Band. As part of the group, King will march in the 137th Rose Parade in Pasadena, CA on New Years Day. When asked what it means to her to be selected for the honor, King shared that she is grateful for the opportunity. "It felt really good– I'm very passionate about band, and want to go into Music Education," she said. With nearly 300 people in the band, the Rose Parade is not only a tradition for viewers around the world but also an opportunity for student musicians to showcase their talents. Sharing a little more about what all her trip will entail, King will arrive towards the end of the month and remain there for roughly a week– all while practicing twice a day and performing two parent preview shows. "My family gets to come out with me as well, which is another thing I am very grateful for," said King. She continued, providing some insight into how being selected for the program works. "I had to first put in an application showing my interest and sharing some of my musical background, stuff like that," she said. The student then must also get written support from that individual's musical director or instructor. Nikki Kleba, King's instrumental music teacher, had nothing but praise for King in regards to her selection. Im really proud of Kirsten, it really is an honor to be able to represent your school– and honestly even state when you're that far away," Mrs. Kleba said. In closing, King shared the following: "Being in band here has been really fun because of the size of our school. Everything has been really hands on, and Mrs. Kleba has been a big help — everyone in the band is pretty fun to be around."
