Senecas snag 62-60 win over Clyde

One critical moment.Calvert for the first time in the entire game was behind Clyde for almost an entire quarter.Logan Ritzler found himself at the free throw line. He made the pair, cutting Clyde's lead to 58-56.Grady Otterbacher canned his last triple of the night, and pulled the Senecas into a one-point lead over Clyde with 1:28 remaining in the game.Calvert then held off Clyde 62-60 on Saturday in Sandusky Bay Conference crossover action."We had some big guys make some big shots down the stretch," Senecas coach Jon Otterbacher said. "When they play loose with the ball, we play a whole lot better. But it's a give and take with this team with hard work and challenging this team and having to battle for every possession. I'm proud of how we played down the stretch."The Senecas (6-3) rapidly capitalized on the lead they just got. After Clyde (4-6) called a timeout after Otterbacher's three, the teams came back to the floor. Logan DeMoss scored a basket on an offensive rebound.JeCori Roberts responded with his final basket of the night, slicing Calvert's lead to 61-60.After Vinny Lyons made a trip to the charity stripe and came out empty handed, a foul was called against Max Swander for a shove on the rebound."It was a big one for us to finish three on the week," Lyons said. "We only had one day of rest, and to be able to win against a bigger school feels great. Once we settled down, started playing our sets, and played our pace, that's when the shots started to fall, we were able to retake the lead and win."Otterbacher stood at the free throw line with two seconds left on the clock and the game and determined whether it was a point or two they would win by.Otterbacher split his pair. The Senecas threw up 17 free throws and made 11. The Fliers only went to the line twice. Both teams didn't make a trip to the free throw line until the second half."We finally figured it out and we were able to pick up the pressure," Clyde coach Jared Shetzer said. "We should have done that the whole game, but the third quarter is Clyde basketball the way it is supposed to look and it did. When it came down to the physicality of the game, it hurt us that we only had four free throw attempts. When you look up at the score board and they are in the bonus, it tells us that we aren't being aggressive enough."Late in the third quarter is when Clyde took the lead for the second time in the game. With 2:47 on the clock, Otterbacher swished a trey from the left side of the arc.Clyde came back with two responses. The first was from a Swander bucket, and the second was from Karcen Garner splashing a triple.It was enough to pull the Fliers ahead 39-38. Coming out of a Seneca timeout, Lyons netted a bucket, to pull Calvert back over, but that was the last time for the quarter that the Senecas had it.The end of the third quarter put Clyde ahead by three points, 46-43."In the third quarter, they were able to up their pressure a little bit," coach Otterbacher said. "I don't think we did a very good job at flashing back the ball and the press."Turnovers were not helping -- Calvert had 16 turnovers compared to four for the Fliers.Clyde maintained the lead through the fourth quarter as Michael Scruggs scored his first bucket of the quarter within 30 seconds of it starting, followed by Webb and Roberts. "JeCori is just a flat-out stud," coach Otterbacher said. "He can score on all three levels. He can hit the three, he can go for a pullup and push a basket over top of you. To limit him to 20 points is a great thing for us. We just tried to make it as hard as possible on him."The Senecas called a timeout, but Scruggs scored consecutive baskets to make it 43-56.Ritzler went to the foul line with 4:23 left and made a bucket into a trey and followed it up with another basket.Otterbacher splashed a three in and with 2:46 remaining, Lyons made a trip to the charity stripe after being fouled by Clyde. He made his bonus shot, making it 56-54."In the first half, we did a really good job of taking care of the ball and controlling the pace and tempo of the game," coach Otterbacher said. "We were able to get open looks and we were able to get shots.In the first quarter Ritzler kicked the game off by scoring a trey.Scruggs answered back with a bucket.Roberts then scored four points, one of which was a slam dunk and the other off an offensive rebound. It was 6-3 in Clyde's favor.Lyon's response was a trey while DeMoss scored a bucket, bringing it to a tie and tip the game back in the Senecas favor. The teams tied two more times in the quarter before Lyons scored a bucket, and Otterbacher ended the quarter on a triple.The leading scorers of the night for the Senecas was Ritzler with 22 points and eight rebounds, followed by Lyons with 15 points and nine rebounds, and Otterbacher with 15 points. For the Fliers, Garner and Webb tied with 13 points, followed by Roberts with 12, and Scruggs with 10.
