Tiffin businessman, former deputy dies

TIFFIN — Members of the Tiffin community are mourning the loss of Dave Spridgeon, who died Friday, Jan. 9. Spridgeon was a longtime local businessman responsible for shaping several well-known establishments in downtown Tiffin, including The Renaissance of Tiffin, a speakeasy-themed bar; The Renaissance on Wheels food truck, described as a "speakeasy on wheels"; The Deli Cafe at Frost Village; and Jolly's Drive-In, a longtime Tiffin staple known for hotdogs and root beer. He also was a former partner and helped to co-found The Bourbon Affair in Findlay. In addition to his business ventures, Spridgeon also served as a deputy of the Hancock County Sheriff's Office for nearly 15 years. Public mourns a friend Those who knew him often described him as a supportive and creative individual, deeply invested in the people around him. Friends, colleagues and residents have taken to social media to share memories and stories reflecting Spridgeon's impact on the community. Donna Gross, Downtown Tiffin Main Street Manager, shared the following: "Dave was not only a dedicated downtown business owner, but also a true friend to me and so many others. He believed deeply in people, in the potential of downtown Tiffin, and he never hesitated to lift others up. We've lost a champion, a mentor, and a friend — and our community is better because of the love and commitment that he gave so freely." Aaron Montz, former mayor of Tiffin, wrote: "Life is fleeting; life is short. Dave knew this, and poured his heart, soul, and energy into his family, friends, and businesses. While we cannot bring you back, Dave, we can — and we will — never forget you and the impact you made in all of our lives." Weston Reinbolt, president of Financial Design Agency of Ohio, also shared a tribute: "It's hard to accept that we're going to continue this mission without you. But rest assured — we will accomplish this mission in your honor and keep your legacy alive. Rest easy, Dave." Lynn Nye, owner of the Arcadia Superette, shared a personal anecdote about when Spridgeon worked as an employee at her business: "In 2002, I was asked a surprised question by a customer wearing a sheriff's deputy uniform," said Nye. "That deputy was none other than Dave, asking me for a part-time job. I remember asking him why he would want to work here, and he explained he was trying to supplement his income with a second job for some family goals." She said she hired him without hesitation. "He worked with me for about a year, and later his son, David, also became an employee. Although now many years ago, this family has always been a part of the Superette's history; I watched Dave and Angie raise four boys in the community for many years, in and outside of the store, and today — I am so sad for his family." Funeral arrangements are pending at Engle-Shook Funeral Home and Crematory in Tiffin.
