Cold shelters available

SENECA COUNTY — With temperatures projected to stay low across the region, local public health and emergency management officials are reminding residents that resources and preparedness information are available for residents in need. The Seneca County Emergency Management Agency maintains information on comfort centers, which may be used as temporary warming locations during severe winter weather. Residents who need a warm place are asked to contact their local dispatch center for information on the nearest available location. Local dispatch numbers include: • Tiffin Police Department: 419-447-2323, ext. 0 • Seneca County Sheriff's Office: 419-447-3456, ext. 0 • Fostoria Police Department: 419-435-8573 Officials note that 911 should be used only for emergencies. Residents are encouraged to dress in layers, limit time outdoors during extreme cold, and ensure adequate heat indoors. Extra attention may be needed for older adults, young children and individuals with medical conditions who may be more vulnerable to cold-related illness. Pets should also have appropriate shelter and access to unfrozen water.
