Tornadoes too potent for Johnson Invite field

DANBURY — Columbian combined wins with depth Saturday to cruise to the girls title at the Craig Johnson Small School Invitational.The Tornadoes won eight of the 12 events, earning at least two placers in seven races, en route to thumping Norwalk St. Paul 169-96 for the title. Pair of Warriors place at Maumee Bay ClassicOREGON — Kaden Bish and Owen Patrizi each placed Saturday to guide Mohawk to 24th out of 58 teams at the Oregon Clay Maumee Bay Classic.Mohawk started the tournament with five grapplers, with Bish taking fourth at 175 pounds and Patrizi finishing fifth at 144 pounds.Clay's Gabe McNally beat Bish 8-3, and Patrizi scored a 12-3 major decision against Elyria's Blake Cancel.Patrizi notched his 100th career win during the tournament.Perrysburg rolled past Brighton 286 1/2-165 1/2 for the top team spot. Two Fliers gain championshipsFREMONT — Clyde's Avery Gaskalla and Meredith Greenslade each won a title and Mallory Meggitt ended second to guide Clyde to fifth at the 38-team Fremont Vantage Lady Giant Tournament.Gaskalla out-scrapped Bellevue's Jersey Mayes 10-8 for the 105-pound crown for the Fliers.Greenslade pinned Gibsonburg's Allison Schroeder (2:59) for the title at 120 pounds.Meggitt's runner-up finish came at 130 pounds after a 15-1 major decision loss to Perrysburg's Savannah Mulkey.Seneca East's Kiera Depinet and Columbian's Ali Nitecki also placed.Depinet, who secured her 100th career win, took second a 140 pounds after getting pinned by Columbia's Youstina Hanna (3:54).Avon Lake's Kaylen Martin scored an 18-3 technical fall win against Nitecki to claim third at 135 pounds.Fremont Ross upended Gibsonburg 158-122 for the top team spot.Clyde scored 94 1/2 points for fifth, Seneca East came in 12th (61), Bellevue took 23rd (32), Calvert (19) and Columbian (19) tied for 28th, Lakota ended 33rd (4) and Hopewell-Loudon tied for 35th (0). Host Redmen 4th, Carey 6th at Fostoria InviteFOSTORIA - The mats were certainly busy at Fostoria High School as the fourth annual Fostoria Girls Wrestling Invitational took place on Sunday.At the 20-team event, Fostoria came in fourth (59 points), Carey in sixth (55 points), Calvert in the 14th spot (18.5 points) and Clyde in 18th place (12 points).For the Lady Red, they had one champion, which was Lilliana Bernal (8-5) in the 235-pound class. She battled her way through five rounds and won on a tech fall against Jaelia Wilson (2-4) of Lima.Senior Ariana Espinosa-Snowden (21-5) came in second in the 170 class. The match was decided on a 7-1 decision, as she wrestled against Martina Ebaugh from Napoleon (17-2). Rounding out the placers for Fostoria was Ahmani Lee. Lee (11-13) came in fourth after a tech fall to Karynne Randleman (15-5) of Perkins.Calvert's Karlah Knight (1-8) went against Carey's Lydia Black (5-6) in round one. Black won the first round on a fall. Knight then went against Bridgette Rice (15-2) from Delphos St. Johns and fell at the 1:13 mark. Gaskalla has 81 career wins so far in her high school career. She got three pins at the invitational and came out in second place in the 105-pound class. Gaskalla (12-3) faced off against Tinley Thieroff (17-3) of Woodmore and fell in a tech fall.Lakota had one placer in the event, and that was Jocelyn Joo. Joo (0-10) took fifth in the 110lb class on a tech fall to Lillian Kendel (15-5) of Gibsonburg. Tornadoes rally for 4th at AHBA TourneySANDUSKY — Columbian's girls stood seventh after the first round Saturday, but rallied in the baker games to claim fourth at the 12-team AHBA Tournament.The Tornadoes opened with Round 1 totals of 750, 743 and 814 before tacking on baker game scores of 211, 167, 202, 121 and 122 for an overall total of 3,130.Napoleon powered past Willard 3,747-3,282 for the team title. Old Fort finished 12th (1,895).Lucy Weidner paced TC with a 558 series after games of 230, 181 and 147, finishing sixth in the individual standings.Cassidy Shane backed her with a 501 series (135, 153, 213) to take 15th and Miriah Distel ended 24th with a 466 (145, 156, 165).Columbian also got single-game scores of 147 from Amelia Miller, 142 from Angela Nominee, 130 from Briana Pryor and 124 from Kaitlyn Distel, and used team scores of 110 and 129.Results for Old Fort were not provided. Sturgill 7th at ABHA eventSANDUSKY — Atreyu Sturgill earned a top-10 finish Saturday at the boys ABHA Tournament, helping Columbian end seventh out of 13 teams.Sturgill wound up seventh with a 633 series after games of 159, 192 and 280.Austin King added a 563 series (205, 189, 177) for the Tornadoes, Hayden Wagner added a 555 (189, 189, 177) and Marshall McBride tallied a 464 (169, 129, 166).Liam Hartson added games of 121 and 134, and Weston Riley rolled a 132.The Tornadoes opened with Round 1 scores of 843, 821 and 936 before registering baker game scores of 194, 144, 232, 185 and 181 for a pin total of 3,536.Napoleon beat Oregon Clay 4,183-4,047 for the crown.
