Sewer projects proposed

TIFFIN — City Council heard first readings Tuesday for a series of major wastewater and infrastructure projects, marking the start of a legislative process for significant citywide upgrades. While the projects were discussed in detail, no final action was taken. Under city council rules, ordinances and resolutions must typically undergo three readings before a final vote can occur. Major upgrades proposed The proposed legislation focuses on the city's Long-Term Control Plan, specifically the Interceptor Upgrade Project and a new High-Rate Treatment Center. City Engineer Matt Watson told the council that the goal is to coordinate these efforts to maximize efficiency. "The plan is to run these two projects simultaneously with advertisements for construction contracts in March with bids opening in April," Watson stated. The legislative package includes resolutions that would authorize the mayor to apply for Water Pollution Control Loan Fund (WPCLF) loans to finance the construction. No rate increase forecasted Despite the scope of the infrastructure work, city officials emphasized that the projects are being planned within current financial constraints. City Administrator Nick Dutro noted that the city's financial modeling shows the work can proceed without a new sewer rate increase. Additional projects on the horizon Council also heard first readings for several other infrastructure-related items: • Eastland Park and Riverview Estates: A plan for sewer replacements that would "go around" existing lines that are still in good condition to save costs. • Sandusky River Wall: A request to solicit professional design services for necessary repairs to a portion of the city's river wall. • Heidelberg Fieldhouse: Proposed easements for sanitary sewers and public sidewalks to support the university's new facility. Since these items remained at the "first reading" stage, they will return to the council floor for further consideration at upcoming meetings.
