Deaf people deserve choice in interpreters Many people think that having any interpreter is enough. For Deaf people who use American Sign Language, this is not always true. The type of interpreter matters, and Deaf people should have a choice. The Deaf community uses ASL as a full and complete language. It is not the same as English. Because ASL is visual, communication depends on clear sight, body language, facial expression, and timing. When these are missing, communication can break down. In Tiffin and nearby areas, there is a lack of in-person ASL interpreters. Many places now use video remote interpreting. This system uses a screen and the internet instead of a person in the room. While video interpreting may work in some situations, it often does not meet the needs of Deaf people. Video systems can freeze, lag, or have poor camera angles. Lighting and screen size can make signs hard to see. When this happens, Deaf people may miss important information. This can be especially serious in medical visits, legal meetings, school settings, and public services. In-person ASL interpreters offer better access. They can see the Deaf person clearly and adjust their signing style if needed. They can respond right away to questions, emotions, or confusion. This leads to clearer understanding and more equal communication. Deaf people are not asking for special treatment. They are asking for effective communication. When Deaf people are told they must accept video interpreting even when it does not work, it sends the message that their needs do not matter. Accessibility should mean real access, not the easiest or cheapest option. By listening to Deaf people and providing in person ASL interpreters, our community can become more inclusive and respectful. Everyone deserves to fully understand and be understood.
