Terra State reaches milestones

FREMONT — For 58 years, Terra State Community College has been a cornerstone of northwest Ohio. More than just a campus, it serves as a state-supported gateway to opportunity, balancing academic excellence with affordability to ensure high-quality education remains accessible to the community. According to college data, Terra State enrolls 2,095 students and offers 70 degrees and certificates across 21 program areas. The year 2025 marked several significant achievements for the college in academics and athletics, as well as within the music department. Terra State has established a new partnership with Bowling Green State University (BGSU). Through a "2+2" degree pathway, students in technology and skilled trades programs can seamlessly transfer associate degree credits toward a bachelor's degree at BGSU's College of Engineering and Innovation. To participate, students must complete an associate degree at Terra State in one of six eligible programs: computer systems, construction technology, electricity, manufacturing engineering, power technologies or digital media technology. Additionally, the college officially opened the Elaine Denman Recktenwald Center on May 2, 2025. The grand opening honored the late Professor Emerita Elaine Denman Recktenwald, who dedicated nearly 50 years to the college, and her husband, Frederick Recktenwald. A $600,000 gift from Mr. Recktenwald, combined with support from the Ohio state capital budget via House Bill 2, funded just over $1 million in renovations and upgrades at the center. The updated facility features a new basketball court and workout facilities for Terra Titan athletes, students, faculty and staff. A new covered entrance walkway and signage also mark the entry as a focal point of the building. In athletics, Terra State freshman Evan Schiefer was recognized as the NJCAA Division III Men's Cross Country National Athlete of the Week in October 2025 following an outstanding performance at the Region 12 Championships. Often competing as the sole representative for Terra State, Schiefer proved his ability to perform at an elite level by preventing the nationally top-ranked Division II Lansing Community College from sweeping the top six positions. This achievement marks the second time a Terra State cross country athlete has earned the national weekly honor; Schiefer was also recognized earlier in the season. The music department also saw unique opportunities recently. In November 2024, 21 students and staff attended a performance by the band Chicago at the Stranahan Theater in Toledo, thanks to the generosity of Galen Arnold, who sponsored the tickets. The experience was further enhanced by Chicago's drummer, Walfredo Reyes Jr., who provided the group with VIP passes following an interaction with the Terra State program director on Instagram. This gave students behind-the-scenes access, a meet-and-greet and a photo opportunity with the band. Before the show, Reyes spoke with students about stage production and shared insights from his career performing with artists such as Carlos Santana, Christina Aguilera and Lindsey Buckingham. Continuing this collaboration, Reyes visited Terra State on Feb. 19 for a workshop focused on drum recording techniques. During the interactive session, he shared his extensive experience in studio recording and touring, offering firsthand insights on capturing a professional sound in a studio setting.
