Seneca County America 250 kickoff announced

TIFFIN — Seneca County will officially kick-off its America 250 celebration with an event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21 at the Historical Octagon House & Farm near Clyde. The event is open to the public, and will serve as an introduction to a yearlong series of America 250 programs planned across the county. The kickoff coincides with the county's designation as an official America 250 "Designated Community," a status that recognizes the county as a local partner in Ohio's statewide semiquincentennial observance. The designation comes as a result of the Seneca County Board of Commissioners passing a resolution earlier this year where they applied to participate in the celebration, which was later reviewed and approved by the state's America 250 commission. For residents, the designation is about more than just a single event, said Marisa Stephens, director of marketing and tourism for the Seneca County Collaborative. "This recognition ensures Seneca County will play an active role in this historic statewide celebration and have the opportunity to share our local stories alongside communities across Ohio," Stephens said. "It's something residents can be proud of." As a designated community, Seneca County will help to coordinate events, highlight local history and showcase the county's contributions to the nation throughout the year. Organizers say the goal is to create programming that reflects the community while offering a variety of ways for residents to participate. As for the location, the Octagon House was chosen for both its historical significance and its symbolism. Being one of the few livable octagon homes in Ohio, the property represents early American innovation and design, while also serving as a welcoming gathering place for the community. "The property's preservation and ongoing revitalization by the Frankart family also reflects the community's commitment to honoring the past while creating spaces that can be enjoyed today," added Stephens.
