Woodland, Warriors wallop Senecas 63-42

A defensive strategy adjustment in the second quarter quickly buried Calvert.Put two of the best shooters from Mohawk – Katie Woodland and Mara Haynes together – you get a stout offense that doesn't relent.After Calvert sliced the lead to a close five-point gap late in the third quarter, Haynes capitalized on a steal and drove it to the basket.Then, on a Warriors possession, Haynes rebounded the ball and made another basket.Calvert knew it was in trouble after seeing the damage Haynes could do.Mohawk defeated Calvert 63-42 on Tuesday in non-conference action."We needed this win," Warriors coach Natasha Mulholland said." We played really well as a team. I am really proud of these girls."Five of the Warriors – Sam Yarger, Haynes, Mara Lease, Woodland, and Chloe Miller scored in double digits, and Woodland had a double-double as she had 16 rebounds as well."It's the first that this has happened this season," Mullholand said.Mohawk (8-11) had one point of doubt in the second quarter when Calvert (11-6) had taken the lead on a Mya Steyer triple, and grabbed a 16-15 lead over the Warriors with 5:45 on the clock.Miller responded with a basket on an inbounds pass, bringing the Warriors in control 17-16."We are just tired," Calvert coach Aaron Sheets said. "Their freshmen scored huge on us in the first quarter, and that hurt us out of the gate. They got to scout and watch us while we played at Buckeye Central. Tonight wasn't our night and we played hard but ugly."Haynes put the first six points of the game on the board within the first minute of the game. She scored her final basket of the quarter with four minutes left, and after a Kaleigh Concepcion triple and a bucket by Megan Rormbach.In the second half, Woodland found herself on the free throw line and nailed both after the back-to-back baskets.The Senecas got possession, only to have it stolen by Yarger, who drove it to the hoop with 2:10 on the clock.Sheets called a timeout, but it was in vain. The last time Calvert saw the ball that quarter was when Savannah Faber went to the charity stripe and made her pair, followed by Carleigh Meier scoring a basket.It was 49-36 by the end of the third."I have to give Mohawk credit," Sheets said. "They came ready to play and they were hungrier than we were. They play in a much tougher league and it would be nice to have a rematch with them in sectionals or districts, which could happen.""I wish I could clone Katie," Mullholand said. "She puts the team on her shoulders and carries them. It's a lot to ask of one person. She knows how to read the floor, looking to get the shot up. She is an amazing captain and amazing player."Besides Woodland who scored 16 points, Haynes was the next highest scorer for the Warriors with 14, followed by Yarger with 11 and Lease and Miller with 10 points. For Calvert, it was a double-double night for Rombach as she had 13 points and 13 rebounds.
