WATCH: Dramatic standoff ignites between Blumensaadt and PIB police

PUT-IN-BAY — If ever a case was made that a criminal defendant and a police agency were star-crossed heading toward disaster, look no further than the June 27 arrest of Put-in-Bay resident Keith Blumensaadt. Blumensaadt, 50, and the police department have a troubled history. Most recently, Blumensaadt filed a complaint with the county prosecutor alleging financial wrongdoing involving Put-in-Bay officials, and harassment at the hands of Put-in-Bay police. The complaint was forwarded to the Ohio Attorney General's Office, which prompted an ongoing criminal probe. Mayor Bernard "Mac" McCann has denied Blumensaadt's allegations, and police Chief Steve Riddle refuses to respond to inquiries from the Register. Anatomy of a close callBlumensaadt was driving on his way home from work June 27 when a Put-in-Bay police officer attempted a traffic stop. The officer claimed Blumensaadt drove erratically, which prompted the attempt to stop him. Although the officer was wearing a body camera, it did not capture any evidence Blumensaadt was driving erratically. The cameras also didn't catch Blumensaadt allegedly holding a gun at his home and pointing it at an officer, which was an allegation included in a police report of the incident. The footage shows Put-in-Bay Officer El'shawn Williams step out of his police cruiser in Blumensaadt's driveway, but quickly jump back into his car and back away.Watch a compilation of police body camera footage from the incident below. [toutembed=d6qjhg]An independent witness, who drove pass Blumensaadt's house, can be heard just moments later telling Williams that Blumensaadt was holding a firearm. Williams quickly shifts his cruiser into reverse and travels away from the home a fair distance and calls for backup."Surround that house," Put-in-Bay Lt. Doug Miller told Williams by phone.Blumensaadt was scheduled to meet with state investigators June 28 — the following day — to review his allegations against the police with them. Although Put-in-Bay police have denied any harassment, it appears they label him negatively. When Williams opens to the recent call list on his cell phone, Blumenstaadt is already listed there as "Suspect Keith." Later, after more officers surrounded the home, Williams called Blumensaadt and an officer claimed he threatened to "fire upon" officers. Blumensaadt's wife emerged from the home and told police her husband is mentally ill. "Some of his issues are legitimate concerns, but then some of them, his brain doesn't operate....He doesn't trust you guys," she told them.Put-in-Bay officers were ordered to wait for the sheriff.
