Fliers head up district-bound grapplers

CLYDE — A Clyde duo and two more area grapplers won titles, and nine other locals gained district berths Friday at the girls sectional wrestling tournament at Clyde.The host Fliers led the way for local teams, with 105-pounder Avery Gaskalla and 120-pounder Meredith Greenslade gaining crowns while 110-pounder Addison Townsley and 130-pounder Mallory Meggit claiming runner-up spots.The top four in each weight class qualified for the March 8 district tournament at Findlay.Gaskalla scored a 12-2 major decision title win against Bellevue's Jersey Mayes, and Greenslade pinned Tinora's Addilyn Delarber (1:17).Tinora's Azlyn Pagan pinned Townsley (1:12), and Mansfield Madison's Estella Koppert Smith pinned Meggitt (3:10).The Fliers also got a fifth from 125-pounder Aubrey Farster after she pinned Mohawk's Rayanne Holman (2:27).Those five placers helped Clyde finish third in the sectional team standings with 110 points.Tinora upended Vermilion 176-152 for the sectional title.Carey captured fifth with 82 points, Columbian held off Calvert 55 1/2-51 for 10th, Bellevue finished 13th (34), Mohawk took 22nd (15), Lakota came in 26th (7) and Hopewell-Loudon tied for 29th (0).Calvert's Evie Pfleiderer pinned Sandusky St. Mary's Grace-Anne Howell (:44) for the 155-pound title.Carey 235-pounder Elly Zimmerly pinned Oregon Clay's Reyna Blackmon for a championship.Carey's Addilyn Hertel took second at 125 pounds after suffering a 15-0 technical fall loss to Vermilion's Cora Frederick.Columbian's Ali Nitecki and Gracyn Brose earned district berths by finishing third.Nitecki pinned Tinora's Ellie Guilliam in overtime (5:35) at 130 pounds, and Brose pinned Mansfield Madison 155-pounder Haylie Hutcheson (2:36).Carey 190-pounder Dakota McKinney also claimed third by pinning Norwalk's Jimena Ornelas (:15).Area fourths went to Carey 105-pounder Clarrisa DeAmicis and Calvert 125-pounder Peyton Ott.Genoa's Kyra Frasure scored a 10-1 major decision against DeAmicis, and Tinora's Addison Siewert pinned Ott (3:37).Along with Farster, locals earning fifth included Bellevue 130-pounder Lillian Begley, Carey 140-pounder Lydia Black and Columbian 145-pounder Asialee Ellis.Begley pinned Vermilion's Kathryn Hrpcha (4:54), Black pinned New London's Hallie Pylant (4:55), and Ellis scored an 8-0 major decision against Port Clinton's Jami Schlotterer.Columbian 110-pounder Taylor Rousch, Calvert's 135-pounder Ali Gosche and Lakota 170-pounder Dalayiana Doyle joined Holman in finishing sixth.Vermilion's Ava Bunn pinned Rousch (2:20), Coldwater's Chloe Frysinger pinned Gosche (1:46), and Mansfield Madison's Alaina Ash won via forfeit against Doyle. Wynford clamps down late on WarriorsSYCAMORE — Wynford bottled up Mohawk in overtime Friday to claim a 65-56 Division VI sectional final.Wynford (7-16) entered halftime clinging to a 26-25 lead, but Mohawk knotted the game at 39 by the end of the third quarter and both teams scored 15 points in the fourth to force an extra period.That's when Mohawk's offense went quiet, getting just a field goal from Andon Clouse.The Royals, meanwhile, scored nine points to advance to the district semifinal.Drew Stanek led the victors with 17 points, Reed Johnson tossed in 16, Jaron Vance tallied 13, Braylon Wells netted nine and Jace Stuckman had seven.Tristan Bright and Trenton Corfman both scored 16 points for the Warriors (10-13). Allen East boots ChieftainsHARROD — Neither shot well from beyond the arc, but Allen East at least connected from there and fared much better at the line Friday in a 55-47 Division VI sectional final win against Hopewell-Loudon.The Mustangs ended just 3 of 15 on 3-pointers, but went 8 of 10 on foul shots, compared to H-L's 0-for-9 showing behind the arc and 3-for-6 effort at the free throw line.Brady Brooks and Camden Smith each scored 16 points for Allen East (14-9), and Ethan Hershberger added sevenAshton Miller's 16 points keyed the Chieftains (12-11). Brody Brickman scored 13 points, Kellen Frankart tossed in eight points and Collin Smith grabbed seven rebounds.
