Patrizi, Bish, Gayheart claim district crowns

ROSSFORD — Two Mohawk grapplers won titles and another from Seneca East did the same Saturday to top area efforts at the Division III district tournament.Individual titles went to the Mohawk duo of 144-pounder Owen Patrizi and 175-pounder Kaden Bish, along with Seneca East 190-pounder Jackson Gayheart.Patrizi scored an 18-3 technical fall against Van Buren's Brooks Hall for his championship.Bish upended Delta's Marcus Nagel 4-1 for his crown.Gayheart downed Port Clinton's Malakii Pinkleton 6-1 in their title bout.The Carey pair of 120-pounder Fisher Montgomery and 157-pounder Jordan Hertel, and Seneca East 215-pounder Alex Young also earned state berths after finishing in the top four.The top four in each weight class advanced to the state tournament, which begins Friday.Montgomery beat Milan Edison's Brayden Barker 6-2 to take third, while Port Clinton's Jace Cornell pinned Hertel (:36) in their match for third.Young scored an 11-3 major decision against Ayersville's Eli Berner in their match for third.Bentley Gayheart of Seneca East added a fifth at 165 pounds, dropping Archbold's Ashton Stuckey 5-2 in sudden victory.Archbold beat Delta 177-161 for the district team title. Mohawk took eighth (71), Seneca East finished 10th (65 1/2) and Carey came in 20th (35 1/2). Calvert (40th, 5), Buckeye Central (tied for 41st, 3) and Hopewell-Loudon (46th, 1) did not have any placers. Jacobs' title tops list of 8 state qualifiersNORWALK — Ben Jacobs claimed the area's lone title to guide Bellevue to third, and seven other locals also earned state berths Saturday at the Division II district wrestling tournament.The top four in each weight class qualified for the state tournament, which begins Friday at the Schottenstein Center at Ohio State University.Jacobs pinned Braxden Martin of Sandusky Perkins (3:52) to capture the 150-pound district championship.That and five other placers — three of them state-bound — helped the Redmen wind up third in the team standings with 116 1/2 points.Clear Fork held off Perkins 129-125 1/2 for the team crown. Clyde took 12th (65 1/2), Columbian came in 21st (31 1/2), Fostoria tied for 23rd (28) and Upper Sandusky ended 27th (17 1/2) in the 44-team field.Thomas Reesman backed Jacobs by taking third at 113 pounds after pinning Defiance's Westen Mast (1:43).Fourths for Bellevue went to 126-pounder Landen Lewis and 138-pounder Owen Sterritt.Galion's Carter Trukovich earned a 19-3 technical fall against Lewis, and Galion's Ryder Alberty scored a 9-0 major decision against Sterritt.The Redmen also got a fifth from 144-pounder Nolan Hartman and a sixth from 120-pounder Nolan Hoffman.Hartman beat Galion's Carsten Banstetter 6-4, and Wapakoneta's Darrian Steinbrunner beat Hoffman 11-4.Clyde's Heath Norris and Michael Gessner each earned trips to state.Norris fell 9-3 in the 120-pound title match to Ontario's Aiden Ohl.Gessner finished fourth at 144 pounds following a 4-1 loss to Marengo Highland's Kasey Clark.Hunter Pollock added a fifth at 126 pounds for the Fliers with a default victory against Norwalk's Aldynn Metzger.Drew Aigler led Columbian with a runner-up finish at 144 pounds. He lost the title bout via default to Clear Fork's Anthony Oscar.Mason Garno added a fifth at 215 pounds for the Tornadoes by blanking Lexington's Brayden Vance 5-0.Ethan Lewis of Upper Sandusky rounded out the area's state qualifiers by ending fourth at 157 pounds. Vermilion's Aiden Kyser upended him 5-3.No Fostoria athletes qualified for state, but two did place.Anthony Kleinmark took fifth at 150 pounds via default against Kenton's Isaiah Mundy.Shelby's Max Miller scored a 16-1 technical fall win against Silas Raney to end fifth at 165 pounds. Depinet, Greenslade claim district titlesFINDLAY – Overall, four local girls grapplers will be heading to Columbus next week after qualifying for the state tournament at the Schottenstein Center. Clyde's Mimi Greenslade won the 120-pound district title, while Seneca East's Kiera Depinet claimed the 140-pound district title at Findlay Sunday.Clyde's Avery Gaskalla (105 pounds) will be joining Greenslade at state, along with Fostoria's Ariana Espinoza-Snowden (170). Greenslade pinned Lakewood's Riley Robertson in 1:14 in the title match, while Depinet won her title match 11-5 over Salem's Paige Menough.Espinoza-Snowden was runner-up as she fell 5-1 to Napoleon's Martina Ebaugh in the first-place match. Gaskalla won by tech fall 18-0 over Normandy's Brooke Yontosh in the third-place bout.The area does have three state alternates as well – Clyde's Mallory Meggitt (130), SE's Kendyll Salyer (125) and Calvert's Evie Pfleiderer (155) – who all finished fifth.
