Fostoria Empowerment Hub opens in library

FOSTORIA — A new initiative designed to connect residents with essential services, technology and workforce support is now open at Kaubisch Memorial Public Library, 205 Perry St.The Fostoria Empowerment Hub, made possible through a grant from the State Library of Ohio and the Institute of Museum and Library Services, is a partnership between the library and the United Way of Fostoria's First Call for Help.The hub provides free, one-on-one support for individuals and families navigating challenges such as completing online applications, finding affordable housing, accessing food or childcare resources and connecting to health-care services.The hub, located in the library's lower level, was created to address growing community needs and to provide a centralized, welcoming space where residents can access help in one place.Library staff members have increasingly seen patrons seeking assistance beyond traditional services, highlighting the importance of a trusted, accessible support system and the library serving as a community anchor, a news release from the library and the local United Way says."The library has always been a place where people come for information, but we're seeing more and more that people also need support in navigating everyday challenges," said Scott Scherf, director of the local library. "The Fostoria Empowermen Hub allows us to meet people where they are and connect them to the resources, tools and opportunities that can truly make a difference in their lives."The initiative focuses on three key goals: increasing access to technology and digital learning, strengthening community partnerships and serving as a hub for equity, connection and opportunity.The hub includes several core components designed to support residents in practical, meaningful ways. A Resource and Referral Hub, developed in partnership with First Call for Help, connects individuals to services such as food assistance, housing, childcare, health care and transportation. Staff and trained navigators are available to guide residents through available options and provide referrals to local agencies.A Workforce and Digital Skills Support Center offers access to computers and support for resume writing, job searches and completing online applications. Workshops on digital literacy, online safety and career readiness will be offered regularly in partnership with local service agencies to help residents build the skills needed to succeed in today's workforce."This hub is about removing barriers and making sure people know they're not alone," said Libra Tedrow, executive director of the United Way of Fostoria. "Through First Call for Help and our community partners, we're able to connect individuals and families to real solutions — whether that's food, housing, employment or health care — and help them take the next step forward."In addition, the hub will host ongoing monthly programming focused on financial literacy, employment, digital safety and overall well-being.Several opportunities are already scheduled, including informational sessions with First Call for Help from 10 a.m., and 1 p.m., March 27; a healthy meals on a budget workshop hosted by the Ohio State University Extension Office from 4 to 5 p.m., April 9; wellness checks and mental health support with local provider Community Health Services from 10 a.m., to 1 p.m., April 24; and assistance with resumes, job applications, SNAP and Medicaid with Seneca County Job and Family Services, from 10 a.m., to 1 p.m., April 27.Signs in the library and Facebook pages will provide information on when the hub is open and available to the community. The space, according to the news release, offers a friendly, judgment-free environment with access to computers, internet and connections to local partners.Residents can learn more about upcoming programs by visiting the library or by following the Kaubisch Memorial Public Library and the United Way of Fostoria on Facebook.
