Fostoria man faces charges after chase

FOSTORIA — A Fostoria man was arrested Monday night after leading authorities on a chase that included vehicle speeds reaching beyond 100 mph and the Fostoria Police Division notifying other law-enforcement agencies as the pursuit went beyond the city limits.Sean Michael Dayton, 40, was taken into custody near the 800 block of Spruce Street, Fostoria police said. In connection with the chase, he faces a third-degree felony charge of failure to comply, a fifth-degree felony charge of possession of a controlled substance and a second-degree misdemeanor charge of resisting arrest. Also, he is charged with fourth-degree felony theft in connection with an incident from Sunday. A news release from Fostoria police said officers were aware of an active warrant for his arrest at the time of his apprehension. Further charges are pending, the release said.Dayton was taken to ProMedica Fostoria Community Hospital for medical clearance before being incarcerated, police said. The news release said Dayton was being held Tuesday without bond at the Seneca County Jail in Tiffin.Police said no injuries or traffic crashes were reported, though both the car Dayton was driving and a police cruiser were disabled due to mechanical issues sustained during the incident.Police said they chased Dayton, who was driving a car registered to a Bowling Green woman, for about 35 minutes through multiple jurisdictions. Authorities said the sheriff's offices of Wood and Seneca counties were notified and a trooper from the Ohio State Highway Patrol joined the pursuit.Dayton led the chase after a traffic stop was attempted at the intersection of West Culbertson and North Union streets at about 8 p.m., police said. He immediately accelerated after officer Moira White activated her emergency lights and siren, police said. Sgt. Brandon Bell had identified the driver prior to the chase, according to police reports.Police said the chase traveled north of the city limits before re-entering while traveling south on U.S. Route 23. A police report said Dayton drove through some residents' yards along the way.Police said Bell stopped the pursuit after it re-entered the city due to increased pedestrian presence and what was called in a news release "the driver's increasingly reckless behavior, including crossing a steep railroad crossing on East Culbertson Street."Police said officers canvassed the area after the chase ended. After Bell found the vehicle stopped along the road on the 800 block of Spruce Street, Dayton was seen fleeing on foot, police reported. Bell and White apprehended him a short distance away as he attempted to enter an unrelated passing vehicle, police said.
