Ferrell, Shenigo and Old have 2020 opponents

SANDUSKY — Seven Erie County elected officials will coast to re-election without an opponent next year. But Treasurer Pam Ferrell and county commissioners Pat Shenigo and Matt Old will face opponents as they seek re-election.Filing for offices closed at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Erie County Board of Elections. Caleb Stidham, of Vermilion, chairman of the Erie County Republican Party, filed for Erie County treasurer. The incumbent treasurer, Pam Ferrell of Perkins Township, a Democrat, filed for re-election, so the two will face off in the November general election.Sandusky resident and Democrat Julie Farrar, a former Sandusky city commissioner, filed for county commissioner. She's running against incumbent Perkins Township resident Pat Shenigo, who is also a Democrat. No Republican filed for the post.Matt Old, a Republican from Berlin Heights, also filed for re-election as a county commissioner. He'll be opposed in the general election by Democrat Grant Harding of Vermilion. Harding ran unsuccessfully against Shenigo in 2016.Meanwhile, Erie County officials who filed for re-election without opposition are Luvada Wilson, clerk of courts, a Sandusky Democrat; Brian Baxter, coroner, a Sandusky Republican; John "Jack" Farschmann, a Huron Democrat; Kevin Baxter, a Sandusky Democrat; county recorder Barbara Sessler, a Democrat who lives near Castalia; Sheriff Paul Sigsworth, a Milan Democrat, and common pleas Judge Beverley McGookey, a Sandusky Democrat.The Erie County Board of Elections will meet Friday to review the petitions from the candidates and certify them.Wednesday also was the deadline for local ballot issues.
