H-L boys, girls sweep Mark Smith Memorial

BASCOM – At Calvert's Mark Smith Memorial meet Saturday hosted by Hopewell-Loudon, it was the host Chieftains who won the boys and girls meets, topping Calvert in both.The H-L boys clipped Calvert 173.5-109.5, while New Riegel was fourth with 89.5 points and Buckeye Central was fifth with 70 points. In the girls meet, H-L topped the Senecas 181.5-130, while BC was third (87.5) and New Riegel placed fifth (65).In the boys meet, the Chieftains claimed seven victories as Aiden Ewald won both the shot put (52-03) and discus (165-08), while Ian Bloom claimed the 1,600 (4:39.71), Urban Elchert won the 110 hurdles (17.90), Mason Reinhart won the pole vault, clearing 10 feet and the 4x2 relay team won as well with a time of 1:40.30.Calvert's Lukas Stultz won the 400 (54.77), the long jump (19-03 ½) and the triple jump (38-08), while Emman Moreno claimed the 800 (2:11.33), Joey Longo won the 300 hurdles (45.74), the 4x1 relay won in 48 seconds and the Calvert mixed 4x4 relay won in a time of 3:59.71.BC's Collin Perry sped his way to titles in the 100 (11.74) and the 200 (23.89), while New Riegel's Cameron Hohman crossed the line first in the 3,200 (10:09.57).The H-L girls walked away with three wins Saturday as Lily Brickner took both the long jump (15-03 ¼) and the triple jump (31-02 ¼), while Ellie Bloom won the high jump, clearing 4-8.Calvert's Emily Miller won the 200 (27.17) and the 400 (58.91) and was a part of the winning 4x2 relay (1:53.27).Wins for New Riegel came in the 100 dash from Mariyah Tilse (13.80), Alexandra Osborne in the 100 hurdles (17.28), Audrey Schalk in the 300 hurdles (54.32) and the 4x1 relay (56.38).BC's Sophia Martin crossed the finish first in the 800 (2:48.55) and the 4x8 relay squad won with a time of 11:38.89. 1-2 punch sparks Blue JacketsCAREY — Maddie Heilman had a day at the plate and Karsyn Piper ended with 20 strikeouts Saturday as New Riegel beat Carey 12-6 and Arcadia 10-0.Carey held off Arcadia 5-3 in the other game.Heilman, New Riegel's leadoff batter, doubled twice, scored twice and drove in a run in the opener against Carey, then went 2 for 3 with a homer and three RBIs against Arcadia.Piper struck out six in a relief appearance to get the win against Carey, then fanned 14 in the five-inning game with the Redskins to notch another victory for the Blue Jackets (7-1).New Riegel had its struggles in the opener, trailing 6-3 after the second inning before pounding out nine runs in the top of the fifth to take control.Ruthann Baughman tripled, singled, scored twice and drove in two runs, Piper doubled, Lacey Schalk singled twice, scored twice and knocked in a run, Claire Schalk added a single, run and two RBIs, Jacqui Tiell and Lakyn Shaferly both singled, scored and chased in a run, Lilly Schalk singled, and Alexis Mathias, Ava Wensink and Ava Hershman all scored.Tylinn Stoll suffered the loss for Carey in the opener. Rams take runner-up spotBUCYRUS — Upper Sandusky captured a title and two seconds Saturday to claim runner-up honors at the Bucyrus Jim Grandy Doubles Tournament.Clear Fork earned the overall championship with two titles and a second."Earning a second place finish out of eight teams is a good result for us. We were obviously hoping to win the tournament but we are happy overall with the outcome," Upper Sandusky coach Aaron Frazee said. "It's fun to get those guys who usually play singles get some time at doubles because they may want to do that in the state tournament."Clear Fork is a really talented team this year and I would expect their top players will make some noise in the sectional tournament," he said. "Their top two were a really strong doubles team."Gage McWilliams and Chandler Elkins gave the Rams the title at No. 3 doubles by holding off their Clear Fork foes 8-7.The pair reached the finals by beating the Galion duo 8-4 and the Marion Pleasant team 8-7.All matches were eight-game pro sets.Runner-up finishes came from the twosomes of Nick Nieset and Ryan Day at No. 1 doubles, and Bryden Groves and Logan Ruth at No. 4 doubles.Nieset and Day beat the Bucyrus team 8-2 and the Shelby squad 8-4 before falling 8-3 to Clear Fork.Groves and Ruth defeated Mansfield Madison 8-1 and Galion 8-0 before losing 8-4 to Marion Pleasant.Upper Sandusky's Lyman Starner and Carter Heilman fell 8-1 in the opening round at No. 2 doubles to the eventual champions from Clear Fork.
