Wyandot Sports Hall of Fame to welcome new class Saturday

The Wyandot Sports Hall of Fame will induct its 14th class Saturday. The WSHOF's stated goal is to "Honor the Past and Inspire the Future." An honoree from each county school, an at-large individual and one team have been added each year since 2011. The Hall also awards 10 scholarships per year to a female and male athlete from Carey, Mohawk, Riverdale, Upper Sandusky and Wynford High Schools. This year's team for enshrinement is the 1994 Mohawk Warrior softball team, coached by Carl Long. It finished 23-4 with a Division III State runner-up trophy, along with a Midland Athletic League championship. The inductee from Carey is 1968 graduate Larry Cole. Cole was tabbed first team all-Ohio in football, 2nd Team All Ohio and honorable mention prep All American in basketball. Cole was Carey's first 1,000 point scorer on the basketball court, which came before the advent of the 3-point line and without a freshman season. He honorably served his country in Vietnam and lives in Tiffin with his wife of 52 years, Linda. Meghan Horn is the inductee from Upper Sandusky. She was a three-time state champion in the shot put for the Rams (2001-'03). She moved on under a full scholarship with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Along the way she has earned many accolades. Meghan earned a Masters Degree from Central Michigan, and worked for the College of Wooster and Maryville College in their athletic departments. She's currently an assistant athletic director at BGSU. Kayla Brown Golding will represent Riverdale in the newest class. She followed up her stellar prep basketball career with the Falcons with an outstanding Hall of Fame career at the University of Findlay. She finished her tenure with the Oilers by totaling 1,277 points, 420 rebounds, 199 steals, and 147 assists, while earning many awards and victories. Kayla lives in Findlay with her husband and their children. Mohawk has chosen Shanna Streng Price to join its illustrious athletic historical record. The 1995 graduate and softball All Ohioan led her team to the state finals in 1994. She continued with a fantastic softball career at Madonna University from 1995-98. She is a career leader in many statistics for the Crusaders. Shanna lives in Tiffin with her husband, Jay. Steve Hartschuh will represent Wynford. This basketball standout scored 1,348 points for the Royals between 1980-84. He averaged 23 points a game and was recognized as first team all-Ohio as a senior, then took his talents to a four-year varsity stint at Indiana University, under legendary coach Bobby Knight. Steve also led the Royals to a state runner-up in baseball. He lives in the Chicago area. Karl Parsell from the old Marseilles High School will be memorialized as the at-large inductee. In his three years playing varsity basketball for the Bulldogs, he scored 1,148 points and led them to several championships from 1945-48. His teams won 62 games in three years and he was the scoring leader as a junior and senior. Karl died in 1972.
