Glassblowing summer camp set

TIFFIN — High school students in Tiffin will have a chance to try their hand at glassblowing this summer through a new weeklong camp being offered by The Poignon Project. Ryan Poignon, owner of the studio, also teaches glassblowing classes at Calvert High School — something that inspired him to start the summer camp, he said. "I wanted to be able to offer what I had been doing in the classroom to more students who may not have had time in their school year schedule," said Poignon. The camp will serve as an introduction to glassblowing, with each session running from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday-Friday. Students are to learn basic safety, tools and techniques before completing small projects such as marbles and pendants. Class sizes are limited to six students per session, allowing for more direct instruction. "This way if people need help, I will be able to be right there," Poignon said. In addition to working with the glass, students will also get an insider perspective on the business portion of running a studio, since the camp takes place in an active workspace. "It'll be a balance of learning the craft and also seeing what we do on a day-to-day basis as studio owners," said Poignon. He said he enjoys teaching and looks forward to working with a new group of students this summer. The different sessions are scheduled as follows: June 1-5, June 15-19, and June 22-27. The camp cost is $200 per student. Registration is available online on the studios website, or in person at the studio.
