Smokin' Sows feeds farmers

TIFFIN — Smokin' Sows Mobile BBQ and Catering is honoring the hard work of local farmers by providing meals to farm families. Kayla Oney of Smokin' Sows, a Tiffin-based catering company, said the Feed a Farmer initiative was born out of a desire to gift those who tend the fields in our rural community, and the response has been "a lot of thank you's." Feed a Family is organized to feed farmers each Wednesday in May, and a Calendly invite is included on the Smokin' Sows Facebook page for families to sign up for a time slot. Generally, Oney said, meals are picked up during a specified time slot, although delivery is an option. Five dinners are included per sign up, and there is no charge for the meals. "We wanted to reach out and give back to them," she said. In addition, since the spring weather hasn't necessarily been good for planting, Oney said she hopes Feed a Farmer is a "pick-me-up" for families. A few slots still are open for next week, she said. Smokin' Sows is planning to offer Feed a Farmer during harvest season this fall, Oney said, and information will be made available closer to that time. Meals include pulled pork, cheesy potatoes, green beans, a roll, a cookie, water, and silverware, in case the food is taken straight to a farmer in the field.
